LG Display will exhibit its technology prowess in OLED and mobile panels at the Society for Information Display conference, held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center from June 3-8 in the U.S. state of Massachusetts.

The Korean display manufacturing giant said that it plans to showcase its 55-inch OLED panel, developed for the first time in the world, which it had originally considered too difficult to construct for large televisions.

Using oxide-thin film transistor and four-color pixel (WRGB) technologies, which feature clearer colors and higher resolution, the company will display the 55-inch OLED TV as its new growth engine in the display sector.

LG Display will also feature its five-inch full high-definition panel for smartphones at the Boston convention, as reported late last month.

Also developed for the first time, the company’s hand-sized LCD panel can display images twice as sharp as on previous HD panels in the market.

Measuring the new panel’s density at 440 pixels per inch, LG Display noted that the image quality shown on smartphones via the small panel will be equivalent to TV and computer monitors.

LG Display was able to achieve this latest development by upgrading its AH-IPS technology, delivering faster response on touch screens, as well as clearer colors and images.

This may be slightly larger than the 4.5-inch panel developed in late 2011, but the pixel density of the five-inch is 30 percent higher than the previous version.

Consumers, however, will be able to read e-books and watch video on their smartphones at a sharper resolution than on the 4.5-inch.

“LG Display will showcase such innovative technologies at the 2012 SID as a means to foray into new markets and offer higher value-added products to customers,” said Yeo Sang-deok, the company’s chief technology officer.

In addition, it will exhibit other lines of products such as LCD PC and laptop display panels with thin and light borderless frames, while showing its 47-inch full HD panel, which uses relatively less power due to the LED edge-lit backlighting.

The company plans to present about 10 research papers to participants and hold a series of meetings with potential clients at the convention. It is expected to receive an award at the event for its contribution to the advancement of display technology.

LG Display is 37.9 percent owned by LG Electronics, the world’s second-largest LCD TV maker. LG Electronics had a global market share of 13 percent in the first quarter of this year, following Samsung Electronics’ 17.5 percent, according to analysts.
