Two members of punk band Pussy Riot have been taken to remote Russian prison colonies notorious for their harsh conditions after a court this month upheld their two-year sentences, their lawyer said on Monday.

"Nadya Tolokonnikova has been sent to Mordovia, and Maria Alyokhina to Perm," defense lawyer Violetta Volkova told AFP.

The Perm and Mordovia regions, both in central Russia, host a vast network of Soviet-era prison camps infamous for their tough conditions.

"They were convoyed on Saturday," Volkova said, noting that their relatives had learnt of the move when their parcels for the women were rejected at the Moscow prison where they had been temporarily held.

It remains unclear when the two young women, who both have small children, will reach their final destination, Volkova added.

A Twitter account organized by the band's supporters also said the two band members were taken in a "special" convoy to the prison camps, but gave no details.

"Of all the possible options, these are the cruelest prison camps," the Twitter account noted.

The art group Voina (War), which is closely affiliated with Pussy Riot, called Mordovia on Twitter "the worst prison hell there is."

Tolokonnikova, Alyokhina and their bandmate Yekaterina Samutsevich were in August sentenced to two years in prison after they staged a balaclava-clad performance inside Moscow's main cathedral mocking President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier this month a Russian appeals court upheld the prison camp sentences against Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina but unexpectedly ordered the release of Samutsevich in what many observers believe was an attempt to split the tight-knit band. (AFP)

러시아 정교회 사원에서 반(反) 푸틴 공연을 한 죄목으로 투옥 중인 펑크록 그룹 '푸시 라이엇'(Pussy Riot) 멤버 2명이 모스크바 인근의 악명높은 교도소로 이송됐다.

변호사 비올레타 볼코바는 22일 "멤버들이 지난 20일 다른 교도소로 옮겨졌다"며 "이들이 임시 수용돼 있던 교도소에 지인들이 소포를 보내려다 거절당했는데, 그 때서야 비로소 (그들이 옮겨진) 사실을 알았다"고 말했다.

멤버 2명 가운데 나제즈다 톨로콘니코바는 모르도비아로, 마리야 알료히나는 페름으로 각각 이송됐다.

모르도비아와 페름은 둘 다 중앙 러시아에 있는 지역으로 옛 소련 시절부터 가혹하기로 유명한 교도소가 있는 곳이다.

볼코바는 "두 멤버가 최종 목적지에 도착했는지도 확실치 않다"고 덧붙였다.

푸시 라이엇의 지지자들이 운영하는 트위터 계정 역시 두 멤버가 특별 호송대에 의해 다른 감옥으로 옮겨졌다는 사실을 전했으나 자세한 내용은 밝히지 않았다.

트위터는 "모든 가능한 선택지 중 가장 잔인한 감옥으로 이송됐다"고만 전했다.

푸시 라이엇과 가까운 행위 예술가 단체 '비오나'는 트위터에 모르도비아 교소도를 "최악의 감옥 지옥 (worst prison hell)"이라고 칭했다.

푸시 라이엇 단원 5명은 지난 2월 크렘린궁 인근의 정교회 사원에서 '성모여, 푸틴을 쫓아내소서'란 노래와 춤이 섞인 시위성 공연을 펼쳐 큰 파문을 일으켰다.

러시아 수사 당국은 단원 5명 중 3명을 '종교적 증오에 따른 난폭 행위' 혐의로 기소, 지난 8월 법원이 징역 2년형을 선고했다.

이어 이달 10일 열린 항소심에서 법원은 단원 3명 중 1명에게만 집행유예를 선고하고 톨로콘니코바와 알료히나에 대해서는 원심 그대로 유지했다.
