Tottenham Hotspurs forward Son Heung-min is unlikely to play for South Korea in an upcoming World Cup qualifier after sustaining a foot injury last weekend, the Premier League club said Wednesday (local time).

On their website, the Spurs said Son suffered the injury in a league match against Manchester City, and will miss the club's next match, against AS Monaco in the Europa League on Thursday (local time).

The club noted that Son, who joined the London side in August, "has spent the past few days being reviewed" and the team's medical staff will monitor his progress in rehab.

Earlier this week, Son was named to South Korea's 23-man squad for the Asian World Cup qualifying match against Kuwait, scheduled for next Thursday in Kuwait City. South Korea will then host Jamaica in a friendly in Seoul on Oct. 13.

However, Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino said Son won't leave the Premier League side to join the national team.

"He is injured, and I think he will stay in England for recovery," Pochettino was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. "I think he will stay with us because it is impossible to travel with his national team. I think it will be a few weeks, but it is an injury we need to assess every day.

"We are lucky that we have the international break now, two weeks, and we hope it is a quick recovery," the coach said. "We believe it is not a big, big issue, but the recovery is always different with different players."

Later Thursday, the Korea Football Association said it is monitoring Son's injury situation but has yet to determine whether he can report to the national team.

Son has scored three goals in five appearances for the Spurs, which plucked the 23-year-old dynamo from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported 30 million euros ($33.5 million).

Elsewhere in the Premier League, South Korea have lost a key player in Crystal Palace midfielder Lee Chung-yong. The KFA announced that he will not be available after suffering a sprained right ankle during practice on Tuesday. He has been ruled out for up to two weeks.

The KFA said it will not name a replacement for Lee. (Yonhap)
