Samsung Electronics said Tuesday that two of its latest organic light-emitting diode televisions disappeared during delivery for the IFA electronics trade show in Berlin last week.

A Samsung official said the firm’s display products were packaged at its Suwon plant on Aug. 21 and arrived at the German exhibition site on Aug. 28. However, the two TVs went missing sometime after that, making it difficult to guess the time and date of their disappearance.

“We found out last Tuesday that the OLED TVs have disappeared and we reported it to the German police soon after the discovery,” said a Samsung official. “We will find out the exact details when the police investigation is over, but we filed the case with the police thinking that there was a possibility that this may be an organizational crime conducted for technology theft.”

If the TVs are deemed to be stolen, it could lead to a technology leak, which could be worth billions of dollars for the world’s top flat-screen TV maker. Police in Germany and Korea are currently both looking into the issue.

The OLED TVs, which have yet to be launched, are dubbed to be the next-generation TVs that have applied the firm’s latest technologies.

Samsung’s TV chief Yoon Boo-keun told reporters at the IFA electronics show last week that the TV maker will roll out the new OLED TVs in the fourth quarter of this year.

This is a bit later than the company’s initial plan to launch the new 55-inch premium OLED TV in the country in the latter half of this year, while some predicted in the past that it may release a new OLED TV at this year’s IFA.

Earlier in May, Samsung said it will roll out the premium OLED TV set in Korea and then launch it in the U.S. and Europe, pricing it at over 10.8 million won ($9,500).

OLED TVs of that size were introduced for the first time by two big Korean TV manufacturers ― Samsung and LG Electronics ― at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.

독일 베를린 'IFA 2012'에 전시될 예정이었던 삼성전자의 올레드(OLED. 유기발광다이오드) TV 2대가 운송과정에서 사라진 사실이 뒤늦게 알려졌다.

올레드TV는 최첨단 기술이 적용된 차세대 TV로, 일각에서는 거액을 들여 개발한 첨단 올레드 기술의 유출까지 우려하고 있다.

4일 업계에 따르면 삼성전자가 'IFA 2012' 전시를 위해 한국에서 독일 베를린으로 운송했던 올레드 TV 2대가 감쪽같이 사라졌으며, 이 사실을 안 삼성전자는 독일과 한국 경찰에 수사를 의뢰했다.

업계는 올레드TV가 분실됐다기보다는 도난당했다는 쪽에 무게를 두고 있다.

삼성전자 올레드TV가 사라진 지점과 날짜 등은 아직 추측조차 어렵다.

삼성전자는 수원사업장에서 올레드TV를 포장했으며 항공편을 이용해 독일 프랑크푸르트공항까지 옮긴 뒤 베를린 전시장까지는 트럭에 실어 날랐다.

올레드TV 2대가 없어진 사실을 삼성전자 직원들이 안 시점은 베를린 전시장에 도착한 물품들을 확인하는 과정에서였다.

삼성전자 관계자는 "8월 21일 수원사업장에서 제품을 포장했으며 28일 전시장에 도착했다"면서 "도착한 제품을 확인하는 과정에서 2대가 없다는 것을 알았다"고 말했다.

사라진 OLED TV는 LCD, PDP 등 평판 디스플레이보다 고도의 기술이 요구되는 최 첨단 TV로 이번 전시회에서도 뜨거운 관심을 끌었다.

삼성전자의 한 관계자는 "정확한 사실은 경찰 조사가 끝나봐야 알 수 있겠지만 최첨단 기술을 빼내기 위한 조직적인 범죄일 가능성도 배제할 수 없어 수사를 의뢰했다"고 말했다.

만일 첨단 기술을 노린 절도라면 수조원대의 손실이 예상된다.

삼성전자는 2001년 4월 미국 국제방송장비전시회(NAB)를 앞두고 63인치 PDP TV를 도난당하는 등 과거에도 유사한 일을 당했다.

이 때문에 삼성전자는 전시회를 앞두고 출품되는 제품에 대해 특별히 보험에 가입하는 등 도난에 만전을 기했다.

한편 이번에 도난당한 올레드TV는 아직 시판되지 않은 제품이다.
