Models of U.S. brand Hollister who allegedly mocked Asians in online photographs were fired, the Daily Mail and other news sources reported on Monday.

Hollister recently announced on its homepage that it dismissed the models who uploaded the offensive photos online, and issued a statement of apology.

“On behalf of our more than 80,000 associates around the world who cherish our core values and our culture of diversity and inclusion, we sincerely apologize for the offense caused by these unauthorized, ill-considered actions,” the company said. The name of the models were not released.

When Hollister has a grand opening, they fly out models that represent the brand’s image to be present for the ceremony and take pictures with the locals. Thus, it was no surprise that Hollister had a group of half-dressed male models at the Yeouido store’s opening. However, the lack of respect for the Asian culture shown by a few models drew criticism from around the world.

One model had uploaded a photo onto Twitter of himself posing in front of Korea’s royal Gyeongbok Palace squinting his eyes and mocking Asians. When someone commented on how many Asians had “liked” the picture, he responded “Hahahaha they ruhhvvv ittt!” imitating mispronounced English.

Another model had been seen giving the middle finger in the photos he took with the locals.

These photos have spread on the web, offending many Koreans and encouraging the boycott of the brand. Even fellow Americans have expressed their disdain. On the store’s Facebook page, a user wrote “stupid racists shame on you. I’m done with Hollister.” Another wrote “You make me ashamed to be a part of the American culture. How can you not screen your employees on cultural awareness?”

아시아인을 비하하는 포즈로 사진을 찍어 논란을 일으킨 미국의 유명 패션 브랜드 홀리스터의 모델들이 결국 해고되었다.

데일리 메일 등 복수의 외신이 10일 (현지시간)보도한 바에 따르면 홀리스터는 최근 자사의 홈페이지에 인종차별 논란에 대해 사과의 뜻을 밝히고 해당 모델들을 해고했다고 밝혔다.

이 사건의 발단은 지난달 30일 홀리스터가 국내 첫 매장을 열고 외국 남성 모델 4명을 섭외해 개점 홍보 행사를 진행하면서 시작되었다. 홀리스터는 매장을 열 때마다 자사 브랜드의 이미지를 대표할만한 모델을 보내 현지고객들과 사진을 찍게 한다. 

그러나 남성모델 중 한명이 경복궁 앞에서 눈을 가늘게 뜨고 입을 크게 벌린 사진을 자신의 트위터에 올리면서 논란이 시작되었다. 눈을 가늘게 뜬 것은 일반적으로 아시아인을 비하한 것으로 받아들여지기 때문이다.

이후 어떤 사람이 이 사진에 대한 아시아인들의 반응을 묻자 이 모델은 “하하, 그들은 이걸 정말 좋아해(Hahahaha they ruhhvvv ittt!)” 라고 엉터리 영어로 답해 논란을 확산시켰다.

또 다른 모델은 고객과 사진을 찍으며 가운데 손가락을 치켜세우는 욕을 하기도 해 비난을 받았다.

이들의 사진이 인터넷에 올라오자 누리꾼들은 “불매운동을 해야한다”라고 하는 등 분노를 표했다. 심지어 미국의 누리꾼들조차 “멍청한 인종차별주의자들이다. 홀리스터는 더 이상 이용하지 않겠다”, “(모델들의 행동은) 내가 미국문화의 일부인게 부끄럽게 만들었다”라고 비난을 퍼부었다.
