Reports: Smaller iPad to be revealed Oct. 23

Apple Inc. is set to reveal a smaller, cheaper version of the iPad at an event on Oct. 23, according to several reports published Friday.

The reports from Bloomberg News, Reuters and the AllThingsD blog are based on unnamed sources with ``familiar with the plans.''

Apple Inc. hasn't said anything about a smaller tablet, a concept company founder Steve Jobs derided two years ago. But company watchers have assumed for months that an ``iPad mini'' will appear before the holiday season.

The screen is reportedly about half the size of the iPad's, which measures 9.7 inches (25 centimeters) diagonally. Analysts speculate the starting price of the device could be about $299.

With the device, Apple could close an opening in the tablet market for rivals like Amazon.com Inc., whose Kindle Fire is half the size of the iPad and starts at $199. Google Inc. and Barnes and Noble Inc. also sell tablets in the same size and price range.

The event would be three days before Microsoft Corp. releases Windows 8, the new version of its operating system. Microsoft will be releasing tablets with the software.

Apple shares rose $1.37, to $629.47 in afternoon trading.

애플 아이패드 미니, 23일 출시

애플의 아이패드 미니가 오는 23일 출시될 것으로 보 인다고 정보기술(IT) 전문 블로그인 올씽스디지털(AllThingsD)이 12일(현지시간) 밝혔다.

그동안 아이패드의 작은 버전이 출시될 것이라는 언론 보도는 무성했지만 애플 측은 이에 대한 공식 언급을 전혀 하지 않아왔다.

올씽스D는 애플의 계획을 잘 알고 있다는 소식통의 말을 인용해 "제품 출시를 알리는 초청 이벤트가 23일 화요일에 열릴 예정인데, 이는 통상 수요일에 발표 행사 를 하던 애플의 관행을 깨는 것"이라고 말했다.

특히 마이크로소프트(MS)의 새 태플릿 출시 예정일보다 사흘 앞서, 애플의 분기 실적 발표일보다 이틀 앞서 출시 행사를 여는 것이라고 웹사이트는 전했다.

월스트리트저널도 애플이 1천만대 분량의 새 아이패드 생산에 들어갔다고 보도 했다.

아이패드 미니의 사양과 사진은 이미 여러 보도를 통해 유출된 바 있다.
화면 크기는 기존의 9.7인치 아이패드 보다 작은 7.85인치인 것으로 알려졌으며 출시가격은 약 299달러가 될 것이라고 애널리스트들은 예상했다.
