North Korea moves missile body to launch site: official

South Korean and U.S. military officials confirmed Sunday that North Korea had moved the main part of a long-range rocket to a launch site north of Pyongyang.

“We understand that North Korea has moved the main body to Dongchang-ri and is preparing for the launch inside a building,” an official of the Joint Chief of Staff office was quoted as saying.

Earlier in the day Japan’s Fuji Television reported a train took the main body to the launch facility in Dongchang-ri, Cholsan County, North Pyongan Province, Saturday, Fuji Television said citing informed sources.

North Korea has said it will launch the rocket to put an observation satellite into orbit between April 12 and 16 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of its founding father Kim Il-sung, which falls on April 15.

Kim Il-sung is the father of Kim Jong-il, the late North Korean leader who died of heart attack in December. Kim Jong-il's son, Jong-un, has taken over in the unprecedented third-generation power transition in any communist state.

South Korea and the United States have called on the North to refrain from the planned rocket launch, seeing it as a disguised ballistic missile test.

The North's move comes as U.S. President Barack Obama and scores of other global leaders are flocking to Seoul to attend the second Nuclear Security Summit.

Washington has said it will not provide food aid to Pyongyang if the North proceeds with the rocket launch, although the U.S.

agreed in February to ship 240,000 tons of food to the impoverished North in return for the North's moratorium on missile and nuclear tests and freeze of uranium enrichment.

"북, 미사일 동체 동창리 운반 발사준비"

한미 양국 군당국은 25일 북한이 탄도 미사일(로켓)의 동체를 평안북도 철산군에 있는 동창리 기지로 운반해 발사 준비를 하고 있다는 외신 보도를 확인했다.

익명을 요구한 합참 관계자는 연합뉴스와의 통화에서 "한국군과 미군 당국은 북 한이 장거리 미사일 동체를 동창리로 운반하여 건물내에서 발사를 위한 준비를 진행 중인 것으로 알고 있다"고 말했다.

앞서 일본의 후지 TV 등 일부 외신과 방송들은 북한이 탄도미사일(로켓)의 본체 로 보이는 물체를 평안북도 철산군에 있는 동창리 기지로 반입했다고 보도했다.

이 방송은 소식통을 인용해 북한이 탄도미사일의 본체 부분으로 보이는 물체를 북서부의 동창리에 있는 미사일 발사대로 반입한 것으로 알려졌다고 전했다.

방송에 의하면 미사일 본체 부분으로 보이는 물체는 지난 24일까지 철도 등을 통해 동창리의 미사일 발사시설에 반입됐다.

산케이신문에 따르면 정찰위성의 정보 등을 종합해볼 때 동창리 기지의 규모는 무수단리 기지의 3배이며, 미사일 발사대의 높이는 50ｍ 이상으로 무수단리(30ｍ)를

웃돈다.

또 동창리 기지의 최대 특징은 연료공급장치가 지하에 있어 연료주입이 시작되 어도 정찰위성으로 포착이 어렵다. 또 연료주입이 자동화돼 있어 단시간 내 발사할 수 있다.

한편, 요미우리신문에 의하면 일본 정부는 이르면 오는 30일 노다 요시히코(野

田佳彦) 총리 주재로 안전보장회의를 열어 북한이 발사하는 위성이나 부품이 일본 영토로 낙하할 경우 요격하기 위한 '파괴조치명령'을 발령할 방침이다.

일본 방위성은 이를 위해 이지스함 3척을 동중국해와 태평양, 한국의 동해 쪽에 전개하는 한편 지대공 유도미사일인 패트리엇(PAC3)을 오키나와를 중심으로 배치할 계획이다.

일본은 북한이 발사하는 위성이나 미사일이 일본 상공을 통과하는 경우 요격하 지 않지만, 영토와 영해에 미사일의 본체나 부품 등이 낙하할 때는 요격한다는 방침이다.
