SEJONG (Yonhap News) ― South Korea’s state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. will help set up power distribution lines at the Zaatari camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan as part of its global support program, the company said Thursday.
The decision came after a request was made from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to provide technical consultation on power distribution and maintenance.
A group of experts will head for Jordan on Sunday to help evaluate the camp’s power distribution system and also set up a consumption measurement system, KEPCO said in a press release.
The Zaatari camp, located some 90 kilometers north of Amman, opened in 2012 to host Syrians fleeing the violence in the Syrian civil war that erupted in 2011. The camp currently hosts about 120,000 Syrian refugees.
