Kim Young-hoon, the chairman of Daesung Group, has been elected to co-lead the World Energy Council.

The decision was made at the council’s Executive Assembly in Monaco on Thursday, industry sources said Friday.

After serving as co-chair for three years, Kim will move on to become the chairman starting in 2016, in accordance with WEC regulations.

Kim became another Korean to serve on an international organization, following in the footsteps of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Kim Yong, president of the World Bank Group.

He also is expected to better reflect Asia in the global energy market, the sources said.

This was the first time that the WEC chose a co-chairman.

The reason for the change, the London-based council said, was to collect feedback and interest from regions outside of Europe to expand the overall scope of the organization, in addition to aiding a smoother transition to the chairmanship. The WEC is an U.N.-accredited global energy body that has more than 3,000 member organizations in more than 90 countries.
