IT giant Samsung Electronics is in hot water after it depicted people beating puppy-shaped computers in a controversial online video clip.

Samsung posted a promotional video titled “Don’t Give Up On Puppy Love” on YouTube for its latest solid-state storage “840” series.

The video portrayed computers as puppies with imaginary ears, eyes and mouth. In the video, owners of these “puppy” computers beat them with a shoe, throw them off a cliff or shoot them with a bow and arrow when the computers get slow.

“I’m actually a bit emotionally disturbed after viewing the early scenes of the ad,” one person wrote on Twitter.

“I’m an animal lover and have a number of pets at home and this brings up a very strong emotional reaction from me,” another said.

The video was taken down from YouTube by Wednesday afternoon but several photos captured from the video are spreading through blogs and on Twitter.

삼성전자 ‘동물학대’ SSD 광고영상 논란!

삼성전자가 자사의 SSD 광고에 동물학대를 연상시키는 장면을 넣어 배포해 논란이 되고 있다.

삼성전자는 ‘강아지에 대한 사랑을 포기하지 마세요(Don’t Give Up On Puppy Love)’라는 제목으로 최신 SSD ‘840 시리즈’의 광고를 제작해 유튜브에 배포했다.

이 광고에서는 컴퓨터를 입과 귀, 눈이 달린 귀여운 강아지로 묘사하고 있는데, 컴퓨터 주인들은 작동이 느려지면 강아지처럼 묘사된 컴퓨터를 신발로 때리거나, 떠밀거나, 활로 쏘는 등 폭력적인 행동으로 대응해 ‘동물 학대’가 아니냐는 논란을 일으켰다.

한 트위터 사용자는 ‘광고 장면을 보고 감정이 상했다’라는 반응을 보였으며 또 자신을 동물애호가라고 밝힌 다른 사용자는 ‘집에 여러 애완동물을 기르고 있는 사람으로서 몹시 불쾌하다’며 유감을 밝혔다.

수요일 오후 2시 현재 이 광고영상은 유튜브에서 삭제조치 된 것으로 코리아헤럴드에서 확인했으나, 이미 일부 장면이 사진으로 캡쳐되어 블로그와 트위터를 통해 퍼지고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
