The Ministry of Land, Transport, Marine Affairs started to move to Sejong City, South Chungcheong Province, on Friday, becoming the first government organization from Gwacheon Government Complex to pack up for the new administrative city.

The ministry’s move is part of the government’s plan to relocate economic-related ministries and their affiliates to Sejong City for balanced regional development.

The ministry said it would complete the relocation of its headquarters in Gwacheon and three affiliates to the new administrative city, 150 kilometers south of Seoul, by Dec. 16.

The relocation will shift 1,694 public workers of the ministry and three affiliates to the new workplace, it added.

The Land Ministry takes the lead in relocating its office to Sejong City as it has been responsible for building the new administrative city, which the previous government initiated to diffuse power and population in Seoul to local cities.

Other ministries and related-governmental agencies will follow suit from next year.
