South Korea’s drug safety agency has suspended the sales of a cosmetic cream imported from the U.S. that contains steroids, and has ordered the company to recall it.

Mario Badescu Healing Cream, known as “magic cream” for helping to minimize the appearance of acne scars, is produced by U.S. facial skin care and beauty product company Mario Badescu Skin Care, Inc.

Through a test conducted by the Korea Food and Drug Administration, two types of steroids -- hydrocortisone and Triamcinolone acetonnoide -- were found in the cream.

Long-term use of steroids can lead to side effects such as bigger capillary veins and skin atrophy.

KFDA warned consumers to stop using the product and also confirmed that they had barred the sale of steroid-containing cream.

'흉터 지워주는 크림' 스테로이드 검출

식품의약품안전청 서울지방청은 여드름 자국을 마술처럼 지워준다고 해 '매직 크림'이라고 알려진 '마리오바데스쿠 힐링크림'에서 스테로이드가 검출돼 판매금지•회수 조치했다고 17일 밝혔다.

검사 결과 미국의 '마리오바데스쿠 스킨케어'사가 색소침착 완화용으로 판매한 이 크림에서 '히드로코르티손(632㎍/ｇ)'과 '트리암시놀론아세토니드(366.9㎍/ｇ)'등 2가지 종류의 스테로이드가 검출됐다.

스테로이드는 장기간 사용하면 모세혈관을 확장하고 피부를 위축하는 등 부작용 을 일으킬 수 있다.

서울식약청은 해당 제품을 구입한 소비자에게 사용을 중단할 것을 당부했다.
