GM Korea Co., the South Korean unit of U.S. automaker General Motors Co., is recalling more than 7,000 cars sold here for a defective shaft in the transmission that may break, causing the loss of power, the government said Thursday.

The recall affects 4,649 Lacetti compact vehicles and 2,606 Chevrolet Captiva family SUVs that were produced between July 24, 2008 and May 29, 2012, according to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.

Renault Samsung Motors Co., the local unit of France’s Renault Group, is also recalling some 1,600 cars for a welding defect.

The welding in the lower arm of the vehicle’s front suspension may break, causing the loss of control, the ministry said.

The recall affects 1,642 units of the QM5 SUVs produced from Jan. 27 through Nov. 21 of last year, it said.

Owners of both GM and Renault vehicles may visit their respective service centers from Friday for free repair services. (Yonhap News)
