Chinese companies are competitively releasing cheap replicas of the Lightning Cable, which is exclusively designed for Apple’s new devices including the iPhone 5 and iPad mini.

The Korea Herald confirmed on Monday that multiple Chinese online shopping malls are offering duplicated 8-pin Lightning Cables for about only $2 each, compared to Apple’s original Lightning Cables at $19 per unit.

The discount is steeper if the cables are bought by wholesale outlets. Through Alibaba, one of the biggest online wholesale shopping malls in China, customers can buy the cables for less than $1 if the purchase volume exceeds 1,000 units.

The industry previously expected that Apple’s new Lightning Cable would be harder to copy, because the certification procedure of its controller unit is more complicated than its predecessor 30-pin cable. Apple has designated Belkin and Griffin, the U.S.-based digital accessories manufacturers, as its official contractors and provided them with an exclusive license to produce compatible products.

Nonetheless, MacRumors, a U.S.-based website which provides news information about Apple’s products, introduced a Chinese replica manufacturer called “iphone5mode” in its report on Oct. 30.

According to the report, iphone5mode posted a video clip online showing that it is producing replica Lightning Cables which seems almost the same as Apple’s original cable.

As the number of China-based manufacturers and sellers like iphone5mode increases and the competition between them elevates, the price of replica Apple cables is expected to drop further.

이러한 가격차는 대량 구매 시 더욱 커진다. 중국 최대의 온라인 쇼핑몰 알리바바(Alibaba)에서는 라이트닝케이블 복제품 1천개 이상 구매시 개당 1달러도 채 되지 않는 가격에 판매하고 있다.

이는 현재 개당 19달러(국내가 26,000원)에 팔리고 있는 애플 정품 라이트닝케이블의 가격과 비교하면 헐값 수준이다.

그럼에도 불구하고 아직까지 애플 측에서는 별다른 조치를 취하지 않고 있다. 종전에 업계에서는 신형 라이트닝케이블의 컨트롤러 유닛의 인증절차가 전작 30핀 케이블에 비해 더 복잡하다는 점을 이유로 복제하기가 더 어려울 것이라고 전망했다. 애플은 미국 디지털 액세서리 제조사 벨킨과 그리핀을 공식 협력업체로 지정하고 호환제품생산 라이센스를 준 바 있다.

그럼에도 불구하고 미국의 애플 제품 정보 사이트 맥루머스(MacRumors)는 지난 10월 30일 ‘아이폰파이브모드(iphone5mod)’라는 중국의 제조업체를 소개하는 기사를 게재했다.

기사에 따르면 아이폰파이브모드는 인터넷에 애플 정품 라이트닝케이블과 거의 흡사한 복제품을 생산하고 있음을 인증하는 영상을 인터넷에 올린 것으로 확인됐다.

이처럼 아이폰파이브모드와 같은 중국 제조사와 판매자의 수가 증가하고 경쟁이 심화됨에 따라 복제품 애플 케이블의 가격 또한 더욱 하락해 악사세리 판매를 통한 애플의 수익에도 타격이 있을 것으로 예상된다. (윤성원 인턴기자 / 코리아헤럴드)
