South Korea’s largest carmaker Hyundai Motor Co. said Monday that its sales jumped 29.1 percent in August from a year earlier despite partial strikes that cut the carmaker‘s vehicle output.

Hyundai sold 381,429 vehicles in August, compared with 295,449 units in the same month in 2012, the company said in a statement.

For the first eight months, Hyundai sold more than 3.13 million units, up 11.5 percent from a year ago, according to Hyundai.

The strong sales performance came despite Hyundai’s 46,000 unionized workers walking off the job for several hours. It was their seventh partial strike since August to demand a wage hike and other fringe benefits.

Still, leaders of the union and management resumed negotiations on Monday to narrow their differences over the union‘s demands.

Kia Motors Corp., South Korea‘s second-biggest automaker, said that its sales increased 17.5 percent in August from a year earlier despite partial strikes.

Kia sold 224,247 vehicles in August, compared with 190,870 units in 2012, the company said in a statement.

For the first eight months of the year, Kia said it sold 1.88 million units, up 4.8 percent from a year ago.

The sales figure came as Kia’s 30,000 unionized workers went on a partial strike on Monday to press their demand for a wage hike and other fringe benefits. The walkout marked the fourth time that the workers downed tools since mid-August.

GM Korea Co., the local unit of U.S. automaker General Motors Co., said that its sales jumped 36.8 percent in August from a year earlier.

GM Korea sold 61,773 vehicles in August, compared with 45,167 units a year earlier, the company said in a statement.

For the first eight months of this year, the carmaker sold 509,540 units, down 1.1 percent from the cited period last year.

Renault Samsung Motors Co., the local unit of French automaker Renault SA, said that its sales edged down 2.4 percent in August from a year ago.

Renault Samsung sold 10,811 vehicles last month, compared with 11,082 units a year ago, the company said in a statement.

For the first eight months, the carmaker sold 79,601 vehicles, down 24.2 percent from 105,001 units sold in the same period last year.

Ssangyong Motor Co., the local unit of Indian sport utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said that its August sales jumped 27.1 percent from a year earlier due to strong sales at home and abroad.

Ssangyong Motor sold 11,610 units in August, compared with 9,136 units a year earlier, the company said in a statement.

For the first eight months of the year, its cumulative sales jumped 23.9 percent on-year to 93,606 units.

The carmaker said backorders of sport utility vehicles still remain, though it resumed night-shift production at its sole assembly plant in Pyeongtaek in May to solve the issue. Pyeongtaek is located about 70 kilometers south of Seoul. (Yonhap News)
