Samsung Electronics is likely to unveil the new version of its flagship smartphone Galaxy S series next month, according to industry sources.

The new phone, dubbed “Galaxy S4,” is expected to be revealed around March. Reports citing Sammobile, the Verge and other sources said on Monday that the launch ceremony would be held in New York City in mid-March.

Expectations as well as rumors are mounting ahead of the launch of the Galaxy S4, reflecting the popularity of the S3 in the global market. Samsung is leading the world’s smartphone market, staging a fight with its rival Apple, whose latest model, iPhone 5, is struggling to expand its share in the Korean market.

Samsung’s new model is rumored to have adopted a 4.99-inch HD screen based on AMOLED technology and come with a variety of cutting-edge solutions. Galaxy S4 will likely use Google’s Android Jelly Beam operating system.

Samsung, however, has yet to announce a formal plan about the S4 launch.

"갤럭시S4" 다음 달 공개!

삼성전자의 갤럭시S4가 다음 달 14일 공개될 예정이라고 삼성전자 전문 사이트 삼모바일, 시넷, 더버지 등 정보기술(IT) 전문 외신들이 18일(현지시간) 전했다.

삼모바일은 러시아 최대의 휴대전화 사용기 사이트의 설립자인 엘다르 무르타진의 트위터를 인용해 이렇게 보도했다.

무르타진은 14일 ‘중대 발표’가 있을 것이라고만 트위터에서 밝혔으나 삼모바일은 “최근 소문에 따르면 이 발표가 갤럭시S4에 대한 것”이라고 설명했다. 삼모바일은 이달 초 갤럭시S4의 출시일을 다음 달 15일로 예상한 바 있다.

갤럭시S4는 옥타코어 칩에 4.99인치 슈퍼 아몰레드(AM OLED, 능동형 유기발광다이오드) 풀HD 화면을 장착하고 안드로이드 4.2.2 ‘젤리빈’ 운영체제(OS)를 탑재할 것으로 알려지고 있다.

삼성전자 반도체 부문은 지난달 미국 라스베이거스에서 열린 CES에서 모바일용 옥타코어 칩을, 삼성디스플레이는 4.99인치 슈퍼 아몰레드 풀HD 디스플레이를 각각 공개한 바 있다.

뒷면 카메라는 1천300만화소로 풀HD급 동영상을 30fps(초당 프레임)로 찍을 수 있고, 앞면 카메라는 200만화소로 HD급(720p) 동영상을 찍을 수 있다.

삼성전자 갤럭시S4가 출시되면 팬택의 베가 넘버6, LG전자의 옵티머스G 프로 등 다른 국내 제조사의 풀HD 스마트폰과 경쟁하게 된다.

한편 삼성전자는 “신제품 출시 일정에 대해 공식적으로 밝힐 수 있는 내용이 없다”는 입장을 보였다.(연합)
