Korean big names LG and Kia swept this year’s Red Dot design award, considered one of the highest honors in the world of design.
LG Electronics said Wednesday it received a total of 27 Red Dot awards, with its curved OLED TV winning the top honor “Best of the Best.” The company garnered 14 awards last year.
LG’s curved OLED TV features the industry’s first ergonomically curved screen with vivid picture quality, creating a panorama effect for viewers.
The new TV set also removes the problem of screen-edge visual distortion and detail loss, the company said.
LG’s other winners included the full HD smartphone Optimus G Pro and the latest side-by-side refrigerator with a Door-in-Door system.
Kia Motors, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor, also won four prizes.
Its Pro Ceed, a three-door hatchback developed exclusively for Europe, topped the product design category, while three others ― the Carens, Ceed and Ceed Sportswagon ― received main awards.
Since its Soul box car won the honor for the first time in 2009, Kia’s flagship models such as K5 and Sportage R have been recognized by the Red Dot award every year.
“Kia’s latest winnings show our design strategy has successfully been settled,” said Peter Schreyer, design chief of Hyundai and Kia brands.
