South Korea's No. 2 tech giant LG Electronics Inc. on Tuesday rolled out its new curved-style smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, with updated features from the original G Flex first showcased in 2013.

The G Flex 2, featuring a 5.5-inch display that curves inward from top to bottom, is slightly smaller than its 6-inch predecessor. The smartphone will become available in the home market this month and gradually reach overseas markets later this year.

Equipped with a full HD plastic organic light-emitting diode (P-OLED) display, the G Flex 2 will provide users with an improved and more vivid definition compared to the original G Flex, the company said.

Curved handsets have not yet entered the mainstream market, but tech firms have been playing with the design for its smartphones and TVs. The curve feature is said to be optimum for human eyes.

The design, which resembles traditional telephones, also provides users with an improved sound quality, LG said.

The device carries Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor and is powered by the 3-band long-term evolution advanced (LTE-A) network, offering a download speed four times faster than the traditional LTE network. A 1GB movie can be downloaded in 27 seconds, LG said.

The gadget, operating on Android 5.0 Lollipop, has a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. Its "gesture shot" feature allows users to take selfies by folding and then unfolding their hands, LG said.

Its 3,000 mAh battery, which cannot be separated, boasts a faster recharge speed, refilling 50 percent of its capacity in 40 minutes, which is 15 minutes faster than other batteries of the same size. (Yonhap)
