A 6-acre tract in Philadelphia, owned by a church group derided as a cult, is available in an eBay auction, starting at $4.5 million.

The property, which includes a swimming pool, a basketball court and 10 rundown buildings, on an entire city block, is owned by the Church of Bible Understanding, an organization founded by Stewart Traill, a former vacuum cleaner salesman who rebranded himself a prophet and attracted followers beginning in the 1970s, The Philadelphia Inquirer said Monday.

By 1985 the church had moved its headquarters to New York, and was ordered by a judge to stop taking in homeless children and putting them to work in a carpet-cleaning business, an incident parodied on the television program "Seinfeld."

City Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwood and state Sen. Anthony Williams, D-Philadelphia, who both represent the area that includes the property, greeted the news of the sale positively, each saying charter schools and other organizations sought to purchase it in the past but could not reach the owner. 미국 필라델피아에 위치한 이 부동산의 규모는 6 에이커 (약 24,281 m²)로 수영장과 농구 코트를 포함한 10개의 건물들로 구성되어있다.

이 교회는 전직 청소기 판매원인 스튜어트 트레일이 창시한 교단으로 그는 자신을 선지자로 자처하며 1970년 대 초반에 신도들을 모았다.

이 교회는 1985년 본부를 뉴욕으로 옮겼으며, 집 없는 아이들을 모아 카펫 청소업체에 보내는 일을 중지하라는 법원의 명령을 받은바 있다. 당시 이 교회의 아동노동착취는 TV프로그램에서 패러디 될 만큼 잘 알려진 사건이었다.

교회 건물이 위치한 지역을 대표하는 여성 시의회 의원 제니 L. 블랙우드와 상원의원 앤서니 윌리암스는 교회가 매물로 나온 사실에 반색했다. 그들은 과거에 공립학교들과 그 외 단체들이 이 부지를 매입하려고 시도 했으나 소유자에게 닿지 못했다고 말했다.
