Hollywood actress Thandie Newton revealed on Thursday her personal experience of being sexually abused as a teen, and urged people to take actions against violence against women.

Newton, a 40-year-old British native, said in an interview with CNN that as a young actress, she was “objectified to the extremes” through the things she was expected to in auditions.

She told of an incident that took place when she was 18. Newton had gone back for a second audition for a part in a movie when the director suddenly made an odd request.

“The director asked me to sit with my legs apart; the camera was positioned where it could see up my skirt,” she said. Then she was asked to put her leg over the arm of the chair and think about how “it felt to be made love to by this person.”

Years later, she found out that the director who she auditioned for had used her images at the audition to entertain his guests.

Newton urged people to take part in stopping such abuse, saying it should be priority.

She also pointed out that people around the abusers and victims should step in as well.

Newton said the female casting director -- who was in the room at the time of her incident -- could have risked her job and spoken out.

“It’s not about the person that’s been abused. It’s not just their role to say ‘enough,’ it’s about the people around. How much the people who witness (such incidents) are the perpetrators of the crime,” Newton saying, calling for raising awareness on violence against women.

On Thursday, Newton took part of a campaign called One Billion Rising that seeks to raise awareness of the attacks against women.

Other stars to support the global campaign include Annie Lennox, Rosario Dawson, Kerry Washington, Jane Fonda and Anne Hathaway.

뉴튼은 인터뷰에서 사람들이 이러한 성적 착취를 막기 위해 싸워야 한다고 주장했다.

그녀는 주변 사람들 역시 이러한 범행을 막기 위해 노력해야 한다고 덧붙였다.

뉴튼은 사건 당시 같은 방에 여성 캐스팅 디렉터가 있었다면서, 그녀가 이런 행위를 막을 수도 있었지만 그렇지 않았다는 것을 지적했다.

“착취를 당한 사람만의 문제가 아닙니다. ‘그만’라고 하는 것은 그들의 몫만은 아닙니다. 주변 사람들의 문제이기도 합니다. 이런 사건을 지켜만 보는 사람들 역시 가해자일 수 있다는 거죠”라고 뉴튼은 말했다.

그녀는 여성에 대한 성적 착취를 막는 것이 많은 사람들에게 우선순위가 되어야 한다고 주장했다.

뉴튼은 이날 열린 원 빌리언 라이징 (One Billion Rising) 켐페인에 참여했는데, 이는 여성에 대한 폭력을 막고자 노력하는 전세계적인 켐페인이다.
