A free workshop is to help teach women how to keep safe in Seoul.
The class to be held in Itaewon on Oct. 15 will be based on techniques from Krav Maga ― an Israeli combat system used by military and police forces around the world.
“The workshop will be specifically geared toward women and what to do if approached or assaulted on the street,” said Anna Desmarais, who is hosting the event at the Body & Seoul Martial Arts and Fitness Center.
“We will be demonstrating techniques applicable specifically to women and the unique situations we encounter.”
Desmarais, who runs the gym as well as an Itaewon restaurant, decided to organize the class after her friend Kelly Frances raised concerns about assaults in the area.
Frances said: “In a short period of time, I had three incidents occur near my home. They were assaults; nothing deadly, but enough to interfere with my life and cause me to feel afraid in my neighborhood.
“I felt that I needed to seek action.”
There are plans to hold more free safety workshops if the Oct. 8 class is well attended.
The class will run from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Body & Seoul Martial Arts and Fitness Center located above Noxa Lounge at the entrance to the Gyeongnidan area of Itaewon.
