Defense Minister Han Min-koo and his Japanese counterpart Gen Nakatani will hold talks next week on bilateral issues, including Japan's security legislation that expands the Japanese military's role abroad, the Defense Ministry said Friday.

In the talks to be held on Tuesday in Seoul, Han and Nakatani will also discuss security issues and their defense policies, as well as bilateral cooperation and exchanges, according to a statement released by the ministry.

Focus will likely be on Japan's recent enactment of a package of security laws that allow its forces to fight alongside its allies abroad.

The move has spawned concerns here that it could lead to unwanted involvement by Japan in issues on the Korean Peninsula, where U.S. forces are stationed.

Han "will hear and discuss the Japanese side's explanation regarding the security law passed in September," the ministry said.

Nakatani will arrive in Seoul on Tuesday for his three-day visit which will include attending the South Korea-hosted ADEX defense exhibition. (Yonhap)
