The second “Culture Wednesday” is upon us, with a longer list of free or discounted cultural programs to choose from.

On Feb. 26, more than 1,000 cultural establishments ― both public and private ― are taking part in the government-initiated movement to make art and cultural experiences affordable for everyone in Korea. Compared to the inaugural Culture Wednesday in January, the number represents an increase of nearly 120 venues.

Culture Wednesdays is a core piece of the government’s plan to enrich the lives of Koreans, notorious for being workaholics, with arts and culture. It runs on the last Wednesday of each month.

Most noteworthy in this month’s program is the participation of local conglomerates.

Kumho Asiana Group plans to hold a free concert in the lobby of its head office in central Seoul. It is offering discounts of up to 50 percent on the ticket prices for concerts and exhibitions being held at Kumho Arts Hall and Kumho Museum.

CJ E&M, CJ Group’s entertainment unit, is providing up to 50 percent discounts on musicals, including “Finding Mr. Destiny,” “Bibap,” “While You Were Sleeping” and “Greece.”

Doosan Group has also joined the campaign, giving discounts of up to 50 percent on concerts and shows taking place at its Doosan Art Center.

Across the country, government-run concert halls, museums, libraries and palaces are offering free admission or whopping discounts. Movies starting between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at large cinema chains CJ CGV, Lotte Cinema and Megabox, as well as some smaller establishments, will be priced at 5,000 won per person, down from a normal 8,000 won.
