The 13th Mise-en-scene Short Film Festival opened Thursday at Megabox Cinema Isu and Art Nine Seoul, both near Isu Subway Station, southern Seoul.

A total of 57 short films, which were selected from 852 entries through three evaluation rounds, will be screened.

The festival jury consists of 10 film directors and five honorary judges. The directors include Yoon Jong-bin (“Berlin”), Min Kyu-dong (“All About My Wife”) and Kim Yong-hwa (“200 Pounds Beauty”). The honorary judges are actors Kang Dong-won, Han Ji-min, Kim Sung-ryung and Cho Jin-woong, and the singer Lee Joon, a member of K-pop group MBLAQ.

The opening film is “Moving Self-Portrait 2014,” a video in which all director entrants introduce themselves. The audience will be given the chance to meet the directors behind the scenes and share their impressions and reactions to their films.

The films are grouped into five different genres. “A City of Sadness” is dedicated to 18 films that deal with social issues. “A Short Film about Love” introduces 12 romantic films and “The King of Comedy” features 10 comedy films. “The Extreme Nightmare” groups eight horror and fantasy films, while “The 40,000 Blows” screens nine action and thriller films.

The winning film of each group will be screened during the closing ceremony.
