South Korea sink India to set up Iran showdown

   DOHA (AFP) - South Korea marched into the Asian Cup quarter-finals with a 4-1 defeat of an obdurate India in their final Group C game at a sodden Al Gharafa Stadium on Tuesday.

   Beneath pouring rain, the Koreans established a quick-fire 2-0 lead through Ji Dong-Won and Koo Ja-Cheol before striker Sunil Chhetri brought India backinto the game from the penalty spot.

   Ji swiftly restored the Taeguk Warriors' two-goal advantage but minnows India's stout defending meant the Koreans had to wait until the 81st minute for
Son Heung-Min to net their fourth goal.

   The result means South Korea finish second in Group C behind Australia on goal difference, after the Socceroos beat Bahrain 1-0, and will contest a
semi-final spot with hitherto unbeaten Group D winners Iran.

   With India having lost 4-0 to Australia and 5-2 to Bahrain in their previous two games, pre-match speculation had focused on how many goals South
Korea might score and they took less than six minutes to break the deadlock.

   Bolton Wanderers winger Lee Chung-Yong spiked a cross into the box from the right that goalkeeper Subrata Paul could only punch into the air and Ji climbed to head home his first goal of the tournament.

   Three minutes later it was 2-0, Ji nodding the ball down into Koo's path and, with the Indian defence static, the Jeju United midfielder deftly rounded
Paul before sliding the ball into the empty net.

   India's fans may have feared the worst but in the 11th minute they were handed an unlikely lifeline when Kwak Tae-Hwi was penalised for clambering over Chhetri as they challenged for a high ball inside the Korean box.

   Chhetri rolled the spot-kick into the bottom-right corner to the sound of jubilant screams from the vocal gathering of Indian fans inside the arena.

   Korea promptly resumed their assault of the Indian goal, however, with Paul saving from Koo's header and Kwak seeing an attempt cleared off the line by
Surkumar Singh.

   Koo was the architect of Korea's third goal, rolling a clever pass between two defenders for Ji, who drew the goalkeeper from his line before lifting the
ball over him and into the net.

   Ji then saw three efforts blocked on the goal-line in rapid succession after Paul spilled the ball at a corner.

   Lee Chung-Yong, Ji and Kwak all worked Paul prior to half-time and the Bolton man also side-footed wide from a good position as the one-way traffic
continued in the second period.

   Substitute Son struck the post from close-range, while Kwak was again denied by a defender on the line and Ji lofted the ball over the bar after Paul
had vacated his goal.

Football: Iran coach wanted to avoid South Korea



   DOHA (AFP) - An Asian Cup quarter-final match-up with South Korea is something Iran coach Afshin Ghotbi wanted to avoid as the country holds a special place in his heart.

   "I love the Korean people. I love the Korean players," he said Tuesday, hours before South Korea beat India 4-1 in their final group game to book a last-eight date on Saturday with Iran, the Group A topdogs.

   "Personally I would not like to end their tournament too soon. I prefer to play them later," Ghotbi said when asked to choose between Australia and South Korea as their quarter-final opponents.

   "South Korea has, of course, great expatriates working with them," he said in apparent reference to Europe-based stars led by Manchester United's Park Ji-Sung.

   South Korea finished second to Australia in Group C on goal difference after each side won two matches and drew one.

   Ghotbi, who grew up in the United States, built his global coaching career in South Korea, starting as a match analyst for Dutchman Guus Hiddink when he guided the Taeguk Warriors to the 2002 World Cup semi-finals.

   He also served as an assistant coach at South Korean club Samsung Bluewings as well as the Korean national team under other Dutchmen Dick Advocaat and Pim Verbeek until 2007.

   Ghotbi has been in charge of Iran since early 2009 and will guide J-League Shimizu S-Pulse after the Asian Cup.

   박지성은 최근 이란에 강한 면을 보였다. 지금까지 A매치에서 박지성이 터뜨린 13골 가운데 2골을 이란과 경기에서 넣었다.
    2009년 2월 이란 테헤란에서 열린 남아프리카공화국 월드컵 지역예선 원정 경기 에서 1-1을 만드는 동점골을 넣었던 박지성은 같은 해 6월 이란과 홈 경기에서도 0- 1로 뒤진 상황에서 승부를 원점으로 돌리는 골을 터뜨렸다.
    이란은 결국 박지성의 두 방에 월드컵 진출에 실패했다.
    박지성이 이란과 8강전에서 득점에 성공하면 자신의 아시안컵 첫 골이 되기 때 문에 의미가 있다.
    박지성은 지금까지 아시안컵에서 모두 11경기에 출전했지만 한 골도 넣지 못했 다. 18일 한 수 아래로 평가된 인도를 상대로 첫 득점에 성공할 가능성이 클 것으로 예상했지만 슈팅 한 번 날리지 못하고 후반에 윤빛가람(21.경남)과 교체됐다.
    또 박지성은 이란과 경기에 이겨야 A매치 100경기 출전 기록을 세울 수 있다.
   흔히 A매치 100경기 출전해 '센추리클럽'에 가입한    한국 선수는 홍명보(135경기), 이운재(132경기), 이영표(124경기), 유상철(122경기), 차범근(121경기), 김 태영(105경기), 황선홍(103경기) 등 7명이다.
    이번 아시안컵에서 3경기에 나와 모두 A매치 98경기에 출전한 박지성은 이란과 경기에서 이겨야   '센추리클럽'에 가입할 수 있다.
    아시안컵 개막 이전에 아버지 박성종 씨를 통해 '아시안컵을 끝으로 대표팀에서 물러나겠다'는 뜻을 밝힌 박지성이 만일 이란과 경기에 패한다면 A매치 99경기에서 멈추게 된다. 100경기 출전을 채우려면 대표팀 은퇴를 뒤로 미뤄야 가능해진다.
    박지성이 이번 이란과 경기에서 직접 골을 넣으며 자신의 아시안컵 첫 득점과 센추리클럽 가입을 자축할 수 있을지 지켜볼 일이다.
    인도와 3차전을 끝낸 뒤 박지성은 그러나 "이란과 8강은 중요한 경기다. 가장 중요한 것은 내가 골을 넣는 것이 아니라 팀이 승리하는 것"이라며 "100경기 출전도 관심이 없다. 목표는 아시안컵 우승"이라고 잘라 말하며 이란전 승리에 전념할 뜻을 밝혔다.

이란 감독: '한국과 대결 피하고 싶었다'

한국과 인도경기가 열리기 직전 이란의 아프신 고트비 감독은 한국은 마음속에 간직한 특별한 나라이기 때문에 8강전에서 호주와 붙기를 원했다고 AFP 통신과의 인터뷰에서 밝혔다.

"난 한국사람들을 사랑한다. 또 한국선수들을 사랑한다"라고 고트비감독은말했다.

고트비감독은 한국과의 인연이 깊다. 미국에서 자란 고트비감독은 2002년 한일월드컵때 구스 히딩크 감독 밑에서 게임분석 코치로 경력을 쌓기 시작했으며 삼성 블루윙스에서 조감독을 맡기도 했다. 2007년 때 까지는 아드보카트, 비어빅 감독 밑에서 한국대표팀 조감독을 맡았다. 2009년 초부터 이란팀을 맡아왔으며 아시안컵이 끝나면 일본의 시미주 S-플러스 팀을 이끈다.
