S. Korean footballers Park, Cha out with injuries

South Korean football players Park Ji-sung and Cha Du-ri have been ruled out for about a month with injuries, their respective European clubs said Tuesday.

Park, a midfielder for Manchester United in the English Premier League, will miss about four weeks of action with a hamstring injury, the team announced on its Web site.

"We got a blow on Saturday morning with the news that Park Ji-sung did his hamstring on Friday afternoon in training," Man United manager Alex Ferguson said on the Web site. "It was very unfortunate because it was his last kick of the ball in training as well. We were really looking forward to having him back after being away for a month at the Asian Cup (in January in Qatar). He'll be out for up to a month, which is a blow to us."

Cha, a defender for Celtic FC in the Scottish Premier League, will also miss about a month. Celtic said on its Web site that Cha sustained an ankle injury while training after the Asian Cup.

Earlier, Celtic had feared Cha would be lost for the rest of the season, but after receiving a further opinion on his conditions, the club said he will be back in action next month.

Both Park and Cha represented South Korea at the Asian Cup, where the country finished in third place. Afterward, Park announced his retirement from international play.

축구 국가대표 은퇴를 선언한 박지성(30.맨체스터 유나이티드)과 스코틀랜드 리그에서 뛰는 수비수 차두리(31.셀틱)가 부상으로 1개월 정도 뛸 수 없다고 소속팀 인터넷 홈페이지가 16일 전했다.

맨유 인터넷 홈페이지는 이날 "박지성은 햄스트링(허벅지 뒤쪽 근육) 부상으로 4주간 경기에 나설 수 없다"고 공식적으로 밝혔다.

11일 팀 훈련 도중 햄스트링을 다친 것으로 알려진 박지성의 부상 소식에 대해 맨유 구단은 "시즌 초반 안토니오 발렌시아의 부상 이후 팀의 주축 선수로 활약해 온 박지성이었기에 알렉스 퍼거슨 감독은 박지성의 합류를 무척 고대하고 있었다"고 분위기를 전했다.

퍼거슨 감독은 "박지성이 다쳤다는 나쁜 소식이 들려왔다"며 "훈련 막바지에 나온 부상이라 매우 불운한 일"이라고 했다.

그는 이어 "한 달간 아시안컵에 출전하느라 팀을 떠나 있던 박지성을 정말 기다리고 있었다"며 "한 달 결장은 우리에게 큰 타격"이라고 아쉬워했다.

박지성은 지난해 12월27일 선덜랜드와의 프리미어리그 경기에 풀타임 출전한 뒤 아시안컵 국가대표로 차출됐다.

이달 초 맨유에 복귀한 박지성은 이번 시즌 6골, 4도움을 기록 중이다.

차두리의 소속팀인 셀틱도 홈페이지에 차두리 부상 소식을 전하면서 "최대 1개월간 뛸 수 없을 것"이라고 밝혔다.

발목을 다친 차두리는 애초 수술을 하게 되면 이번 시즌 출전이 어렵고, 수술 없이 재활치료를 받더라도 2개월 가까이 결장할 수밖에 없을 것으로 예상됐었다.
