S. Korea, Qatar play to scoreless draw as Olympic football

South Korea played Qatar to a scoreless draw in the last Olympic football qualification game here Wednesday, extending its unbeaten streak in the qualifying stage with a ticket to London already in hand.

At Seoul World Cup Stadium, the home side dominated the ball but failed to convert any chances. South Korea entered this game having already qualified for the London Olympics, thanks to the 3-0 victory over Oman last month that clinched the top spot in Group A.

That rendered Wednesday's match essentially meaningless for South Korea, though head coach Hong Myung-bo and some players had said all week that they would try to beat Qatar before home fans.

South Korea ended the final round with three wins and three draws. It hasn't lost in final Olympic qualification rounds since January 1992.

Qatar, on the other hand, needed to beat South Korea and have Oman lose to Saudi Arabia Wednesday to have a shot at qualifying.

Qatar entered Wednesday's game ranked third in Group A, one point behind Oman. But Oman drew Saudi Arabia 1-1 Wednesday to finish in second place and end Qatar's Olympic hopes.

Second-place countries in this final round will enter a playoff, with the winner moving on to face Senegal for the final chance to qualify for the London Games.

While Qatar's offense fluttered, its goalkeeper Ahmed Sofyan helped keep the game scoreless amid a South Korean onslaught.

Sofyan foiled three great chances by South Korean winger Yun Il-lok alone, first denying him from the point-blank range in the 13th and later punching out a strong shot from just inside the box in the 42nd minute. Then in the 67th, Yun charged in for another hard strike that forced Sofyan to make a jumping save.

South Korea will be making its seventh straight Olympic appearance and ninth overall. It has never won a football medal and has gone past the first round only twice.

The draw for the Olympics will be held on April 24 in London.

Sixteen teams will enter the competition.

Olympic football teams are for players under 23 years old. But participants are each allowed to pick up to three players over that limit, known as "wild cards." (Yonhap News)

반면 카타르(1승4무1패•승점 7)는 이날 같은 시간에 펼쳐진 오만(승점 8)과 사 우디아라비아(승점 3)가 1-1로 비기면서 조 3위를 확정, 올림픽 본선 진출의 희망을 살리지 못했다.

올림픽 본선행의 실낱같은 희망을 살리기 위해 승리가 절실한 카타르를 상대로 한국은 전반 시작과 함께 중원에서부터 짧은 패스를 활용한 빠른 공격으로 골을 노렸다.

한국은 전반 12분 정동호(항저우)의 오른쪽 측면 크로스를 받은 윤일록(경남)의 강력한 오른발 슛이 골키퍼 선방에 막혀 결정적인 골 기회를 놓쳤다.

반격에 나선 카타르는 전반 14분 하산 알하이도스가 아흐메드 압델모탈의 패스를 받아 페널티지역 왼쪽 부근에서 한국의 골 그물을 흔들었지만 부심의 오프사이드 깃발이 먼저 올라 득점으로 인정받지 못했다.

한숨을 돌린 한국은 전반 42분 서정진(수원)의 스루패스를 윤일록이 받아 페널티지역 오른쪽에서 시도한 슛이 또다시 골키퍼의 선방에 막혀 득점 없이 전반을 마쳤다.

후반 시작과 함께 공세를 이어간 한국은 후반 9분 오버래핑에 나선 왼쪽 풀백 윤석영(전남)이 찔러준 패스를 서정진이 골 지역 왼쪽에서 왼발로 강하게 찬 게 옆 그물에 꽂혔다.

홍명보 감독은 후반 17분 체력이 떨어진 서정진을 빼고 오른쪽 날개에 김태환(서울)을 투입, 분위기 반전을 시도했지만 집중력이 떨어지면서 좀처럼 골 기회를 살 리지 못했다.

한국은 후반 32분 윤일록이 페널티아크 부근에서 오른발로 감아 찬 슛이 카타르 골대 오른쪽 구석을 향했지만 몸을 날린 골키퍼 손끝에 걸려 아쉬움을 남겼다.

막판 공세에 나선 한국은 종료 직전 김태환이 페널티아크 부근에서 때린 오른발 슛이 골키퍼 가슴에 안기면서 끝내 득점 없이 경기를 마쳤다. (연합뉴스)
