Man confesses while high, regrets

A repeat drug offender was booked after turning himself in while under the influence of methamphetamines to “become a new man,” but regretted his decision after coming down from the drug.

According to the police Thursday, the 34-year-old man identified by his family name Oh bought a gram of methamphetamines at a street value of 800,000 won ($710) moments after being released from a 14-month drug abuse sentence.

Oh had injected roughly 0.1 grams of the substance at a motel in Seoul, which kept him on a high for two days. Hazy from the effects of the drug, Oh decided to “stop using the drugs,” and turned himself over to the police.

“After being released, I wanted to be a better man, but I could not control it,” Oh told police while under the influence.

“I think I will die if I take any more,” he rambled.

After coming down from the effects of the drug, Oh, realizing that he had turned himself in, regretted his actions.

“It seems as though Oh was asking for help in his own way while under the influence,” a related officer said, as quoted in other news media.

“While in custody he was unable to recollect the time and place where he had injected himself, because he had taken such a large amount,” said the officer.

0.1ｇ에 이르는 다량을 한 번에 투약한 탓에 약 기운은 이틀이 지나도 가시지 않았다. 몽롱한 상태가 이어지던 와중에 그의 뇌리를 스치는 생각이 있었다. '이제 그만 해야지.'

오씨는 환각상태인 채 서울 성북구의 한 경찰 지구대를 찾아 "마약을 투여했다"며 자수했다.

그는 경찰 조사에서 "출소하고 새 사람이 되려고 했는데 도저히 통제할 수가 없다. 마약을 더 하면 이젠 죽을 것 같았다"며 횡설수설했다.

그런데 시간이 지나 약 기운이 가시고 나자 정신이 번쩍 들었다. 오씨는 약에 취해 자수한 사실을 땅을 치며 후회했지만 소용없었다.

경찰 관계자는 "오씨가 약 기운에 취한 상태에서 자기 나름대로 사회에 도움을 요청하려 했던 것 같다"며 "붙잡혀 오고서도 범행 장소와 시간 등을 제대로 기억하지 못할 정도로 많은 양을 투여한 상태였다"고 전했다.
