Second son of Hanwha Group head booked with hit-and-run

South Korea's police said Thursday they booked the second son of Kim Seung-youn, chairman of Hanwha Group, after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident last month.

According to Gangnam Police Station, Kim was suspected of hitting a car that was waiting to make a U-turn in the affluent southern part of Seoul on Feb. 27 and then fleeing the scene without reporting the accident to police. They said Kim turned himself over to authorities in early March.

His father was found guilty in 2007 of beating bar employees with gangsters hired in retaliation after Kim was involved in a scuffle with them. The chairman returned as the chief of the group, the country's ninth-largest family-run conglomerate, in 2008 after a presidential pardon. (Yonhap News)

한화 김승연 회장 차남 뺑소니로 입건

서울 강남경찰서는 24일 승용차를 들이받고 도주한 혐의(특정범죄 가중처벌 등에 관한 법률상 도주차량 운전)로 한화 김승연 회장 의 차남 김모씨를 불구속 입건했다고 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 김씨는 지난달 27일 오전 4시56분께 청담동의 한 아파트 앞 도로 에서 자신의 승용차를 타고 학동 교차로 방향으로 달리다 반대 방향에서 유턴하려고 대기 중이던 승용차를 들이받고서 피해 운전자를 구호하거나 사고 사실을 경찰에 신고하지 않은 채 도주한 혐의를 받고 있다.

김씨는 사고를 낸 지 이틀만인 이달 1일 경찰에 자수했으며 현재 약식 기소된 상태다.

김씨는 지난 2007년 유흥업소 종업원에게 폭행을 당한 사실을 아버지에게 알려 김승연 회장의 보복 폭행 사건을 부르기도 했다.

한화그룹 측은 "단순 접촉사고였으며 김씨가 과거 사건 때문에 순간 당황해서 현장을 떠났지만 이틀만에 경찰에 신고했다"고 해명했다.
