More foreigners apply to major in Korean studies: report

SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Yonhap) -- A growing number of foreigners are interested in studying about Korea, spurred by the growing cultural power of Asia's fourth-largest economy, a report showed Thursday.

Foreigners who applied for the Graduate School of Korean Studies (GSKS) at the state-run Academy of Korean Studies totaled 156 this year, up from 35 in 2009 and 143 in 2010, according to the report by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

The GSKS was established in 1980 to nurture scholars to conduct in-depth research in Korean studies and promote education in related subjects around the world. It waives tuition for international students.

By nationality, Chinese students topped the list with 100, followed by Mongolians (35), Russians (23), Uzbeks (22), Vietnamese (21) and Taiwanese (10), during the cited period, the report said.

The Korean studies program was most popular among those from Asia with 238 students, it noted, followed by Europe (63), Africa (15), North America (12), Central and South America (4) and Oceania (2).

한국학연구 희망 외국인 학생 매년 급증

한국학 연구를 희망해 한국학중앙연구원 한국학대학원 유학을 지원하는 외국인 학생의 수가 매년 크게 늘어난 것으로 나타났다. 이에 따라 보다 많은 유학생을 유치하기 위한 전략이 시급한 것으로 지적됐다.

국회 교육과학기술위원회 소속 배은희(한나라당) 의원이 22일 교육과학기술부로부터 제출받아 공개한 국정감사 자료에 따르면 연도별 한국학대학원 유학 지원자 수는 ▷2009년 35명 ▷2010년 143명 ▷2011년 156명으로 집계됐다.

출신국가별로는 중국이 100명으로 가장 많았고, 이어 ▷몽골(35명) ▷러시아(23명) ▷우즈베키스탄(22명) ▷베트남(21명) ▷대만(10명) 등의 순이었다. 지역별로는 ▷아시아권(238명) ▷유럽(63명) ▷아프리카(15명) ▷북미(12명) ▷중남미(4명) ▷오세아니아(2명) 등의 분포였다.

그러나 미국과 일본의 경우 연구원의 유학안내책자 배포장소 791곳 중 334곳이 몰려 있는데도 불구하고 유학 희망자가 각각 8명과 5명에 그친 것으로 지적됐다. 연구원은 외국인 유학생에 대해서는 수업료 등을 면제하고 있다.

배 의원은 “유학생 유치 사업은 친한파, 지한파를 세계적으로 널리 확산하기 위한 것인데 비효율적 홍보 때문에 특정국가 편중이 나타나고 있다”며 “상대적으로 교류가 적은 중남미와 아프리카 학생들을 적극 유치할 필요가 있다”고 말했다.
