Seoul police seek extradition of murder suspect from Germany

The police are seeking the extradition of a man from Germany who confessed to murdering his wife in Seoul.

The 48-year-old German is currently under police custody in Berlin after he confessed to murdering his Korean-German wife at about 4 a.m. on Dec. 22.

The man left Korea soon after the murder and confessed to the German police upon arrival in Berlin.

The German police have refused to hand over the suspect citing principles of personal jurisdiction, but the Seoul agency plans to pursue the matter in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice and the International Criminal Police Organization.

The Korean police were alerted to the murder by the German police through Germany’s embassy in Seoul.

Following the report, the officials from the Seocho Police Station said that they found the body of the 49-year old woman, who immigrated to Germany with her mother and sister about 40 years ago, identified by her surname Cho in a closet at the couple’s residence on Sunday morning. The woman had been strangled with a cord, the police said.

Although the German man has remained silent regarding his motive for murdering his wife of some 30 years, Korean investigators suspect that the crime was motivated by financial reasons.

According to the police, a statement written in 2009 that Cho had rights over 90 percent of the couple’s wealth and that the two will not give each other psychological or physical stress was found in Cho’s bag.

The couple has been selling accessories purchased in Asian nations including Korea and Japan through the internet since 2007. The two arrived in Korea on Dec. 4 and have since stayed at the property where Cho’s body was found.

한국계 여성, 강남서 독일인 남편에 피살

한국계 독일인 여성이 서울 강남에서 독일인 남편에게 살해당해 경찰이 수사에 나섰다.

25일 서울 서초경찰서에 따르면 경찰은 24일 오전 9시30분께 서울 서초구 서초 동의 한 오피스텔 장롱에서 끈으로 목이 졸린 채 숨진 조모(49)씨의 시신을 발견했 다.

앞서 조씨의 남편인 독일인 W(48)씨는 22일 오전 4시께 부인을 살해한 뒤 곧바 로 독일로 출국, 베를린 경찰서에 한국에서 아내를 죽였다고 자수했으며 독일 경찰 이 주한 독일대사관을 통해 이 사건을 한국 경찰에 통보한 것으로 전해졌다.

현지에서 구속된 W씨는 독일 경찰 조사에서 살해 동기에 대해 묵비권을 행사했 다.

한국 경찰 관계자는 "조씨 가방에서 2009년에 작성된 '신고된 재산의 90%에 대 해 조씨가 권한을 갖는다. 또한 정신적·육체적으로 서로를 압박하지 않는다'는 내 용의 메모지가 발견됐다"며 "재산관계로 인한 범행으로 추정된다"고 밝혔다.

W씨는 화학박사 학위 소지자로, 2007년부터 조씨와 함께 한국, 일본, 태국 등에 서 머리끈, 귀걸이 같은 액세서리를 사들여 독일의 인터넷 사이트에서 판매하는 사업을 해온 것으로 알려졌다.

약 30년 전 결혼한 이들은 지난 4일 함께 입국해 이 오피스텔에서 지내며 동대 문시장 등에서 액세서리를 구입했다.

조씨는 약 40년 전 어머니, 언니와 함께 독일로 이민간 것으로 전해졌다. 조씨 의 시신은 현재 강남의 한 병원에 안치돼 있다. 경찰은 26일 시신을 부검할 예정이 다.

앞서 경찰은 독일 경찰에 W씨의 신병 인도를 요청했지만 "'속인주의' 원칙에 입 각해 불가능하다"는 답변을 받았다. 경찰은 앞으로 법무부, 국제형사경찰기구 등과 협의해 추가로 범죄인 인도를 요구할 계획이다. (연합뉴스)
