There are online and offline manuals telling you how to use Twitter and Facebook, but few tell you what not to post there.

You can tell every detail of your life to your friends and family in person, but online, being so open can hurt you because it can be read by anyone, according to Forbes and the Huffington Post. This is why many people in South Korea become hesitant to use these services, as they are used to the blog-style personal homepage at social networking site Cyworld.

Forbes mentions some risks, such as being burglarized at home while on vacation or getting fired for posting insults about someone at work. It doesn’t hurt to know how to prevent trouble that can come along with using Facebook and Twitter. 


What not to post on Facebook and Twitter and why:

1. Confessions and office gossip

Don’t say everything that you want to say online. Spitting out everything about your work can cost you a job. Talking about illegal activities, even those you consider minor, can also create trouble.

2. Your home address and phone number

Publicizing your home address and phone number can put you at risk. There was a case of a burglar breaking in while the home owner was on vacation after seeing his/her address on Facebook.

3. Your vacation timeframe

Announcing your plans to be away from your home for vacation can mean that your house is “empty and unwatched,” said New York Times columnist Ron Liber. Also counting the days left till your vacation date is an alarm clock for thieves waiting to break in as soon as you leave home. It is recommended that you post your photos on Facebook and leave remarks when you return.

4. Your short trip away from home

Thieves are waiting for an opportunity to find an empty house. So think twice before posting your outings.

5. Personal information and every detail of your life

To avoid phishing, be careful not to post too much about yourself. Since anyone can read your tweets, you need to be cautious when you mention your personal information such as your birth date and place, and anything that will act as a hint to your passwords.

6. Your kids’ names and routines

Think twice before posting your children’s names and especially routines online. Your child’s safety may be endangered.

7. High-risk activities

There is a possibility that insurance companies could check your Twitter or Facebook accounts to assess risks or analyze compensation requests. “Tweeting about frequent climbing trips, for example, could result in a premiums hike,” said the Huffington Post.

8. Personal attacks on other users, racy or inappropriate photos

A well-mannered person won’t do these in person nor online. Words said and inappropriate photos posted can come back to haunt you later.

9. Geotagged photos (Twitter)

Your tweet photos can reveal where you live, what your home looks like, which can result in revealing too much private data. If you want your privacy, turning off the location tracking function is recommended.

집 주소와 전화번호 공개는 당신을 위험에 처하게 할 수 있다. 한 예로 페이스북에 게재된 주소를 보고 주인이 휴가를 떠난 사이 도둑이 침입한 적이 있다. 

3. 휴가 기간
당신의 휴가기간을 공개하는 것은 당신의 집이 그 기간 동안 비어 있다는 증거다. 또한 휴가날까지 남은 날을 세는 것도 도둑에게 집을 털 수 있는 날이 몇 일 남았는지 알려주는 셈이 될 수 있다. 휴가가 끝난 후 집에 돌아와서 페이스북에 휴가를 갔다 왔다는 사실과 사진을 올리는 방법을 추천한다. 

4. 잠깐의 외출
자신이 외출한다고 하며 행선지를 게재하는 것도 집이 도둑들 위험을 만드는 것이다. 

5. 개인정보와 자세한 일상생활
당신의 생일, 출생지, 비밀번호를 맞출 수 있는 힌트가 될만한 정보는 피싱 사기를 불러올 수 있다.

6. 자녀의 이름과 일상생활
자녀의 이름과 일상생활을 너무 자세히 밝혀 놓는 것은 자녀가 범죄에 노출 될 위험을 높일 뿐이다. 

7. 위험한 활동
보험회사는 당신의 트위터와 페이스북을 확인하며 위험요소를 파악하고 보험금 지급에 참고할 수 있다. 암벽등반과 같은 위험한 활동을 한 후 온라인에 알리는 것은 보험료를 인상시킬 수 있다고 허핑턴 포스트는 말한다. 

8. 타인에 대한 공격, 부적절한 사진
타인에 대한 공격과 야하거나 부적절한 사진을 게재하는 것도 나중에 자신에게 부메랑처럼 돌아와 문제를 야기할 수 있다. 

9. 위치 정보가 드러나는 사진이나 글
특히 트위터에는 위치 정보를 자동으로 인식하는 기능이 있어 당신이 올리는 사진과 글들에 위치정보가 드러날 수 있다. 위치 정보 인식 기능을 끄는 것이 안전할 수 있다.
