The government may have decided to scrap a plan to build a new international airport in the country's southeastern region due to economic considerations, sources in the ruling camp said Sunday.

   The sources told Yonhap News Agency that a special panel set up to review the two candidate sites for the new airport have decided that it would be better to abandon the expensive building program.

   "The panel made up of civilian experts and policymakers under the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs reached the conclusion that both Miryang and Gadeok Island are unsuitable," said an insider, who declined to be identified.

   Others said that if the government makes its formal announcement to throw out its plan for the new airport, this may be followed by a proposal to expand the aircraft and passenger handling capabilities at Gimhae International Airport, which is already one of the top four busiest airports in South Korea.

   Expanding the two existing runways could allow Gimhae, located outside Busan, to handle large jets such as the B747 and A380.

   Seoul had said it would announce the results of its review on Wednesday, although it may be delayed by one day.

   Plans to construct the airport have become extremely controversial. Officials from the city of Busan and South Gyeongsang Province supported using Gadeok, just off the country's southeastern coast, as the site by building a man-made island.

However, Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province pushed for the airport to be built in Miryang, which would have required cutting into mountains to make way for runways and airport terminals.

   Both projects are expected to cost taxpayers trillions of won with some experts questioning the logic behind building a new airport at this juncture.

   Choosing the site for the new airport has triggered heated political debate within the ruling Grand National Party, which traditionally receives strong backing from the Gyeongsang region.

   The airport was first proposed by the late President Roh Moo-hyun in 2006 with incumbent President Lee Myung-bak pledging to build it during his 2007 election campaign. Initially there were 35 candidate sites.

   Advocates say the country needs a new airport because the region is home to 13 million people and an air link could help boost the regional economy.

   Related to the controversy, the president said last month that the selection must be made in a legitimate, reasonable way and not through politicking. "It is better for the issues to be resolved in a fair way in a fair society that moves toward becoming an advanced, top-notch nation," he said.

정부, 동남권신공항 백지화 결론낼 듯

입지평가위 발표 하루 늦출 수도..'김해공항 확장' 선회 가능성

    (서울=연합뉴스) 추승호 이승우 이상헌 기자 = 정부가 최근 지역간 마찰을 빚고 있는 동남권 신공항 건설 방안을 사실상 백지화하는 쪽으로 결론을 낼 가능성이  높 은 것으로 27일 알려졌다.

    국토해양부 입지평가위는 그동안 동남권 신공항 후보지인 밀양과 가덕도에 대한 현장 실사 작업과 경제성 및 사회.환경 부문 평가 등을 벌인 결과, 두 후보지 모두 경제성이 부적합하다는 평가를 내릴 가능성이 높다는 관측이다.

    입지평가위가 이 같은 결론을 내린다면 결국 현재의 두 후보지 모두 동남권  신 공항에 부적합하다는 것인 만큼 이는 동남권 신공항을 사실상 백지화하는 수순에 들 어간다는 의미로 볼 수 있다.

    동남권 신공항 건설이 무산될 경우 정부는 기존의 김해공항을 확장해 영남권의 공항 이용 수요를 충족하는 대안 쪽으로 선회한다는 입장인 것으로 전해졌다.

    박창호 동남권 신공항 입지평가위원장(63.서울대 교수)은 지난 25일  "1천300만 명이 거주하는 동남권에 허브공항이 필요하다"며 잠재 수요를 고려해 영남권 공항 증설의 필요성을 밝힌 바 있다.

    이에 따라 정부는 입지평가위의 '동남권 신공항 사실상 백지화' 발표 직후 김해 공항 확장 가능성에 대한 검토 작업에 착수할 가능성이 높은 것으로 알려졌다.

    입지평가위는 당초 30일 평가 결과를 발표할 예정이었으나 구체적인 평가  작업 이 늦어지면서 결과발표가 31일로 하루 정도 늦춰질 가능성도 있는 것으로 전해졌다 .

    동남권 신공항은 지난 2006년 12월 노무현 전 대통령이 부산 기업인들의 건의를 받고 검토를 지시하면서 거론되기 시작했으며 이명박 대통령은 대선후보 시절인 200 7년 8월 영남권 신공항 건설을 공약했다.

    그러나 올들어 가덕도를 미는 부산과 밀양을 미는 대구.경북 간의 이해관계가 첨예하게 부딪히면서 심각한 지역갈등 양상을 보이고 있다.

    한편, 청와대는 이처럼 동남권 신공항 방안이 첨예한 지역갈등 양상으로 비화된 데 대해 국토부의 홍보 및 여론 관리가 미흡했다고 보고 대책을 마련중인 것으로 알 려졌다.

    국토해양부 고위 관계자는 이와 관련, "아직 평가단계로 아무 것도 결정된 바 없다"면서 "입지평가위원회의 가중치 부여와 평가단의 채점이 원활하게 이뤄지면 예 고했던 대로 30일 발표할 것이며, 여의치 못할 경우 하루 정도 늦어질 수는 있지만 현재로선 예정대로 30일 발표를 목표로 하고 있다"고 밝혔다.
