Actress Yun awarded top French honor

South Korean actress Yun Jung-hee will be honored with a “Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et Lettres” by the French government on Tuesday, according to the French Ministry of Culture and Communication on Saturday.

Established in 1957, the order of France is given to cultural figures who have made significant contributions to the arts or literature or the propagation of these fields.

Yun was recommended by the insiders of the French film industry, after she gave a strong performance in the lead role of the award-winning film “Poetry.” The film, directed by Lee Chang-dong, swept many awards last year including the screenplay prize at the Cannes International Film Festival.

Yun’s husband, pianist Paik Kun-woo, received the chevalier in 2001. This is the first time a Korean couple has received the same award from the French government.

Yun had returned to the screens after 16 years with “Poetry” and won many best actress awards as well.

“I am so happy that the French Culture Ministry approved of my career in film. It is especially meaningful because it is the same award my husband received 10 years ago,” said Yun.

Three others, including Lambert Wilson of the film “Of Gods and Men,” will also be honored with the chevalier on Tuesday.

'詩' 윤정희 佛문화훈장..첫 한국 예술인부부 수상

영화 '시(詩)'의 주연배우 윤정희가 프랑스 정부로부터 문화예술공로훈장을 받는다.

2일 프랑스 문화커뮤니케이션부와 영화계 등에 따르면, 윤정희는 프랑스 영화계 의 추천으로 프랑스 문화부 장관이 수여하는 문화예술공로훈장 슈발리에(Chevalier dans l'ordre des Arts et Lettres) 수상자로 선정됐다.

슈발리에 훈장은 프랑스 정부가 예술과 문학 분야에서 공헌을 세우고 문화 보급 에 많은 노력을 기울인 인사에게 주는 상으로, 윤정희는 지난해 8월 프랑스에서 개봉된 '시'가 집중조명을 받으면서 영화 분야에서 그동안 쌓아온 업적이 인정돼 프랑스 국립영화영상센터의 추천을 받은 것으로 알려졌다.

특히 10년 전인 2001년에 윤정희의 남편 백건우 피아니스트가 이 훈장을 받았기 때문에 한국인으로는 처음으로 프랑스 정부로부터 같은 훈장을 받은 예술인 부부가 된다.

윤정희는 영화 '시'로 16년 만에 스크린에 복귀, 대종상 여우주연상과 호주 아시아태평양 스크린 어워즈 여우주연상을 받는 등 지난해 국내외에서 많은 상을 휩쓸었다.

윤정희는 "프랑스 문화부가 제 영화 인생을 인정해줬다는 데 기쁨을 느낀다"면서 "특히 10년 전 남편이 받은 상을 이번에 받게 돼 더욱 마음이 간다"고 말했다.

훈장 수여식은 오는 5일 오후 프랑스 문화부에서 거행되는데, 윤정희 외에 지난 해 칸영화제에서 심사위원 대상을 받은 '신과 인간'의 주인공 랑베르 윌슨 등 3명도 이날 함께 문화예술공로훈장을 받는 것으로 알려졌다.
