〈매료, 몰두, 좋아함, 기쁨〉

1. sanguine [sǽŋɡwin] 명랑하고 낙천적인

sanguine은 ‘피’와 관련된 형용사 sanguinary와 어원이 같다. 낙관적이고 자신에 찬 성격은 피가 많기 때문이라는 옛 믿음에서 나온 말로, 앞으로 일어날 일에 대해 낙관적이고 들떠 있는 태도를 표현한다.

It was a sunny day, and he was of a truly sanguine disposition, singing along to the radio and looking forward to a day at the beach.

날씨는 좋았고 그는 매우 즐거운 기분에 라디오의 노래를 따라 부르며 바닷가에서 보낼 시간을 고대하고 있었다.

● 연방준비이사회는 경기 전망에 대해 더욱 낙관적이고 더 이상 저금리를 유지할 필요가 없다고 믿는다.

The Federal Reserve is more sanguine about the economic outlook and believes low interest rates are no longer necessary.

2. snug [snʌ́ɡ] 몸에 꼭 맞는

snug as a bug in a rug(양탄자의 벌레처럼 포근하게 느끼는)라는 표현처럼 포근하고 아늑한 느낌을 snug라고 한다. 특히 의복이 몸에 딱 맞는 것을 표현할 때 쓴다.

Although it is important to make sure that your ski boots are not too loose, you should also make sure that they are not too snug.

스키 부츠를 너무 헐겁지 않게 하는 것도 중요하지만 너무 꼭 맞지도 않도록 해야 한다.

● 새 이어폰은 실리콘으로 된 끝부분이 귀에 딱맞는 느낌이라 좋다.

I love the snug fit provided by the silicon tips of the new earphones.

〈초조, 불안, 짜증, 놀람, 혼란〉

1. baffle [bǽfl] 당황하게 하다

이해하기 힘들거나 너무 어려워서 당황하도록 만든다는 뜻이다.

The questions in the new edition of Trivial Pursuit were so difficult that they even baffled longtime experts.

새 버전 보드게임의 질문은 너무 어려워서 오랫동안 전문가 레벨이던 사람도 당황하게 할 정도다.

● 실마리가 하나도 없어서 경찰은 당황스러웠다.

The entire absence of clues baffled the police.

2. consternation [kɑ̀nstərnéiʃən] 깜짝 놀람, 실망

사람을 혼란스럽게 만드는 ‘놀라움’과 ‘실망’을 일컫는다.

Consternation furrowed the old man's brow when he heard of his son's sudden plans to leave law school and join a punk rock band.

아들이 법학대학원을 그만두고 펑크록 밴드에 가입하기로 결정했다는 갑작스러운 소리에 놀란 아버지의 이마에는 주름이 졌다.

● 그는 갑자기 진보 정당을 탈퇴하고 보수 정당에 가입해서 지지자들에게 놀라움과 실망을 안겨 주었다.

To the consternation of his supporters, he suddenly broke away from the liberal party and joined a conservative party.

3. despondent [dispɑ́ndənt] 낙담한

노력이 더 이상 소용없음을 알고 낙담하거나 실의에 빠진다는 의미다.

The despondent war correspondents privately began to disclose their suicidal thoughts to friends and family back home.

실의에 빠졌던 종군기자는 집에 돌아와서, 개인적으로 자살을 생각했던 얘기를 친구와 가족에게 털어놓기 시작했다.

● 실망한 팬이 그라운드로 뛰어드는 바람에 경기가 중단되어야 했다.

After a despondent fan ran onto the field, the game had to be put on hold.

4. disgruntled [disɡrʌ́ntld] 불만인

dis(강조)+gruntled(‘불평하는 소리를 낸다’는 뜻인 grunt와 같은 어원)로 이뤄진 단어다. 뭔가에 불만을 간직한 상태를 표현한다.

The disgruntled employees grumbled to each other about the poor working conditions, long hours, low wages and lack of professional development.

불만에 찬 직원들은 열악한 근무 환경과 긴 노동 시간, 낮은 임금, 경력 개발 기회 부재 등에 대해 서로 투덜거렸다.

● 두 시간 넘게 기다린 끝에 불만족스러운 팬들은 콘서트장을 나가 버렸다.

After enduring a two-hour delay, the disgruntled fans walked out of the concert.

5. distraught [distrɔ́ːt] 제정신이 아닌

distract와 어원이 같다. 정신이 집중되지 않은 상태, 특히 고통이나 갈등으로 제정신이 아닌 모양을 묘사하는 단어다.

The distraught mother looked for her child in the shopping mall parking lot, crying and calling out the child's name.

울면서 아이의 이름을 부르는 어머니는 쇼핑몰 주차장에서 아이를 찾느라 경황이 없었다.

● 장례식에 참석한 사람들은 가누기 힘든 슬픔에 정신이 없었다.

People at the funeral were distraught and overwhelmed with grief.

6. dumbfounded [dʌ̀mfáundid] 크게 놀란, 어안이 벙벙한

‘말을 못한다’는 뜻인 dumb과 ‘당황하게 한다’는 뜻인 confound의 found가 합해진 말이다. ‘놀라서 말을 못 할 정도다’, ‘어안이 벙벙하다’라는 의미를 지닌다.

Bob was dumbfounded and stood in shock for a few seconds after he walked in on his surprise birthday party.

안으로 들어서자 그를 맞이한 깜짝 생일 파티에 어안이 벙벙해서 밥은 놀란 채로 몇 초 동안을 서 있었다.

● 올림픽 금메달리스트가 예선에서 탈락하자 사람들은 크게 놀랐다.

People were dumbfounded when the Olympic gold medalist was eliminated in the preliminary round.
