Boy hangs self after watching samurai film

An 8-year-old British boy was found hanged after viewing a film that features suicides.

Lewis McGlynn had been watching the 2003 Tom Cruise film “The Last Samurai,” when his father discovered him hanging from his bedroom door, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

His family and neighbors desperately tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly afterwards.

Lewis had a large number of DVDs in his bedroom that belonged to his older brother, but his parents had not stopped him watching them.

The 2003 Tom Cruise film contains samurai customs including seppuku, a suicide ritual. In one scene a man stabs himself in the stomach with a knife before he is beheaded by another man.

“Violence is not a taste issue but a harm issue and this case unfortunately shows what can happen when children are exposed to extreme violence. Parents must ensure they keep these films and games out of reach of children,” said Vivienne Pattison, director of lobby group Media Watch UK, was quoted by the newspaper.

루이스는 평소에도 영화에 나오는 내용을 그대로 따라 재연하는 습관이 있었으며 할복 자살 등 잔인한 장면이 담긴 영화를 본 후 침대 방의 문에 목을 메 숨 진 것으로 밝혀졌다.

영국 로비 단체 미디어 워치 (media Watch UK)의 책임자 비비안 패티슨은 “이번 일을 통해 어린이가 나이에 맞지 않는 폭력 유해물을 게임 및 영상 매체를 통해 접근 하는 것을 막기 위한 경각심을 가져야 한다.” 고 말했다.
