The number of adults in their 30s and 40s living with their parents in the capital city of Seoul soared

91.4 percent, led by rising house prices and childcare costs, a report showed Friday.

The report released by the Seoul Metropolitan Government found that the number of adults aged 30 to 49 who live with their parents jumped to 484,663 in 2010, compared with 253,244 in 2000.

The report was based on an analysis by the city government of the 10-year statistics of the national census, it said.

According to the report, 39.5 percent of the elderly parents said they live with their adult children even after their marriage because their children are unable to live independently for economic reasons or they have to take care of their grandchildren.

Another 32.3 percent said they live with their grown-up children because of their own economic and health reasons, it said.

Meanwhile, the report showed that more elderly people do not want to live with their children.

The proportion of people over 60 who hope to live with their children fell to 29.2 percent in 2011, from 49.3 percent in 2005, the report said.

Seoul's population stood at 10.52 million as of 2011, according to the city government's Web site. (Yonhap News)
