5 pct of youth vulnerable to Internet addiction: study

About 5 percent of South Korean youths are vulnerable to Internet addiction, a government study showed Wednesday.

   According to a joint report on Internet usage of 1.81 million students by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the education ministry, 89,755, or 4.9 percent, were deemed at risk of falling into cyber addiction.

   Of those, 23,085 were put in the high-risk category, while 66,670 were considered potential risks.

   The students were in fourth grade in elementary school, their first year of middle school or their first year of high school.

High schoolers showed a higher percentage of Internet addiction than younger students.

   The Ministry of Gender Equality said it plans to offer counseling and necessary treatment to young Internet addicts in cooperation with local hospitals and community counseling centers.

   The ministry will provide up to 500,000 won (US$457.50) for treatments and also run camps for addicts.

    여성가족부는 교육과학기술부와 함께 지난 3~4월 전국의 초등학교 4학년, 중학 교 1학년, 고등학교 1학년 등 모두 181만7천95명을 대상으로 벌인 인터넷 이용습관 진단 전수조사 결과 인터넷 과다사용 문제로 어려움을 겪는 청소년은 조사대상의 4.

94%인 8만9천7백55명으로 나타났다고 25일 밝혔다.

    이 가운데 2만3천85명(1.27%)은 고위험군으로, 6만6천670명(3.67%)은 잠재위험 군으로 분류됐다.

    고등학교 1학년생의 인터넷 중독률은 5.46%로 중학교 1학년(4.89%), 초등학교 4 학년(4.38%)과 비교해 가장 높았다.

    여성가족부는 희망하는 청소년에 대해 전국의 166개 청소년상담지원센터와 179 개 치료협력병원을 통해 상담과 치료를 지원할 계획이다.

    특히 인터넷중독 고위험군에 대해 심리검사 결과에 따라 치료비를 50만원까지 지원하며 집중치료 캠프도 운영한다.
