A former Coca-Cola truck driver committed a $1 bank robbery to get free health care while in prison, The Telegraph reported.

James Richard Vernone, who has never been in trouble with law, decided to rob a RBC bank in North Carolina.

Mr. Vernone, 59, has been unemployed and suffering from several health problems. He walked into the bank with a note saying “This is a bank robbery. Please give me $1.” After handing it to the bank teller, he sat in the bank, waiting for the police to arrest him.

He has two ruptured disks, a growth on his chest and a problem with his left foot. However, he has no health insurance, leading him to implement the plan. He believed prison was the best place to receive free medical care.

Because he did not use any weapon during his robbery, he hopes to be sentenced for three years, during which he can receive free health care.

“I wanted to make it known that this wasn’t for monetary reasons but for medical reasons. If it is called manipulation, then out of necessity because I need medical care, I guess I am manipulating the courts to get medical care,” said Mr. Vernone.
