Peru to send air, ground rescue to find missing helicopter with 8 Koreans

MEXICO CITY -- The Peruvian military and police are ready to send in rescue teams to find a helicopter carrying eight South Koreans that went missing earlier in the week, a diplomatic source said Friday.

The South Korean Embassy source in Lima said a 21-person air rescue team is on standby so they can be sent in by helicopter to the Hualla Hualla region where the ill-fated S-58 chopper may have crashed late Wednesday.

The site where the helicopter may have crashed is located between the cities of Mazuco and Cusco in southeastern Peru at a latitude of 13 degrees and 27 minutes south and a longitude of 71 degrees and 7 minutes west.

The Koreans on board were all employees of Samsung C&T, the Korea Water Resources Corp., the Korea Engineering Consultants Corp. and Seoyeong Engineering. They were returning from a trip to a potential hydropower plant site near Mazuco.

Besides the eight Korean nationals, the Sikorsky chopper had one Dutch engineer who works for Samsung C&T, as well as five other people including the flight crew.

The Peruvian military said they plan to send the team as soon as the weather clears. Past attempts to reach the site have been hindered by bad weather. In addition, a 15-person ground rescue team has also been dispatched to the likely crash site, which was detected by the air force earlier in the day.

Local authorities, meanwhile, said because more than 40 hours have passed since contact with the chopper was lost, there is grave concern for people on board even if they survived the crash. The region is 4,000 meters high with temperatures falling to minus 16 degrees C at night.

Related to the incident, Samsung C&T and the Korea Water Resources Corp. said they have sent teams to Peru so they can work with local authorities to expedite the search and rescue effort.

페루에서 한국인 8명 등을 태운 헬기가 실종된 지 사흘째를 맞은 가운데 현지 군과 경찰이 필사적인 수색작업을 계속했으나 기상악화로 별다른 성과를 거두지 못했다.

주 페루 한국 대사관의 김완중 공사는 8일(현지시간) 연합뉴스와의 통화에서 "

페루 공군은 8일 낮 구조대원 13명을 태운 헬기 1대를 실종된 헬기가 있을 것으로 추정되는 '와야와야(Hualla Hualla)' 지역 내 오콘가테(Ocongate)로 투입해 수색작 업을 벌였으나 기상악화로 별다른 성과를 거두지 못하고 철수했다"고 말했다.

공군 수색 헬기는 이날 실종된 헬기가 있을 것으로 추정되는 지점에서 5마일 정 도 떨어진 곳까지 접근했으나 강풍이 불고, 눈이 내리면서 시계가 불량해 8일 저녁 일단 철수했다.

페루 당국은 9일 기상조건이 나아지는대로 공군과 경찰 및 사고 헬기사 소속 헬 기 3대를 총동원해 공중수색을 계속할 방침이다.

오콘가테는 쿠스코에서 동쪽으로 73㎞ 가량 떨어진 산악지대 내 작은 마을로 추 정되며 사람들이 실제 거주하는 지는 파악되지 않고 있다.

현지 경찰은 군의 공중수색과 별도로 육로를 이용한 수색활동 작업도 계속했다.

페루 경찰은 산악구조대원 30명을 오콘가테 지역에 투입해 헬기 실종 추정지역 이 육안으로 식별이 가능한 지점까지 접근했으나 주변에 절벽이 많고, 이틀간 내린 눈이 많이 쌓여있어 더이상 전진하지 못한 상태라고 김 공사는 전했다.

수색에 나선 경찰 산악구조대는 특히 날이 어두워지면서 기온이 영하 15도 밑으 로 떨어짐에 따라 15명은 현지에서 숙영을 하며 잔류했고, 나머지 15명은 인근 경찰 서로 철수했다.

박희권 페루주재 한국대사는 헬기 실종지역의 기상이 안좋아 헬기를 동원한 공 중수색이 어려운 사정을 감안해 페루 내무장관 및 경찰청장을 만나 육상 수색대를 대폭 증원해 신속한 수색구조작업을 벌여줄 것을 요청했다.

페루 내무장관은 이에 따라 고산 산악구조 특수부대인 `로스칼파스' 대원 20명 을 9일부터 투입해 현지 경찰 수색대와 공조 수색작업을 벌이기로 했다.

또 언론 보도로 한국인 탑승 헬기 실종사고 소식이 알려지면서 현지에 거주중인 산악지대 주민들도 자발적으로 수색 및 구조작업에 나서고 있다.

김 공사는 "9일에는 페루 공군과 경찰 및 사고 헬기회사 소속 헬기 3대를 투입 해 수색작업을 계속할 예정"이라면서 "특히 육로 접근을 통한 수색을 강화하는게 낫 다는 판단에 따라 경찰 및 산악구조 특수부대원들을 증강해 수색작업에 나설 계획" 이라고 말했다.

김 공사는 "기상조건이 악화되지 않을 경우 9일 육상 구조대원들이 헬기 실종 추정지역까지 최대한 접근할 수 있을 것으로 본다"면서 "헬기를 통한 공중수색과 육 상수색 및 현지 주민들의 수색 등 동원 가능한 자원을 총동원해 나가도록 페루 정부 에 요청중"이라고 말했다.
