NEW YORK (AP) _ Hackers broke into Fox's political Twitter account early Monday, posting updates saying President Barack Obama had been assassinated.

A series of six tweets coming from the FoxNewsPolitics account reported that Obama had been shot to death in Iowa and the shooter was unknown.

In a statement posted on its website later Monday morning, Fox News called the tweets ``malicious'' and ``false.'' It said the hacking is being investigated.

``We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts,'' said Jeff Misenti, vice president and general manager of Fox News Digital.

Obama plans to spend Monday's Independence Day holiday at a barbecue at the White House with military families and administration staffers.

Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie says the agency wouldn't comment on the tweets.

Fox's political Twitter account has more than 34,000 followers.

미국 케이블 뉴스방송인 폭스뉴스의 트위터 계정이 4일 해킹당해 '버락 오바마 대통령이 저격당해 암살됐다'는 등 거짓 내용을 담은 트윗이 올라 한때 소동이 일었다.

폭스뉴스는 해킹 사실을 발견하고 즉각 성명을 통해 "폭스뉴스의 정치기사를 다루는 트위터가 오늘 아침 해킹당했다"고 밝혔다.

폭스뉴스는 "해커들은 '대통령이 암살됐다'는 등 몇건의 악의적인 허위 트윗을 올렸다"며 "물론 트위터에 오른 이들 보도는 전혀 사실이 아니며, 오바마 대통령은 7.4 독립기념일을 가족과 함께 보내고 있다"고 즉각 파문 진화에 나섰다.

폭스뉴스는 "해킹 사실은 조사중이며, 거짓 트윗으로 초래됐을 수 있는 모든 심려들에 대해 유감을 표명한다"고 밝혔다.

한편 백악관 경호를 담당하는 재무부 비밀검찰국(SS)이 이 사건에 대한 수사에 착수했다고 AP통신이 보도했다.

이와 관련해 비밀검찰국의 대변인인 조지 오길비는 대통령 경호를 담당하는 사법당국이 이번 사건에 대한 수사를 하게 될 것이라고 말했다.
