Deceased pregnant wife case back in court

More than five months have passed since the mystery death of a doctor’s pregnant wife, but the case is still unsolved.

The father of the dead woman has had his daughter frozen and postponed the funeral to prove that her doctor husband killed her and her unborn baby.

The husband, a medical doctor in Seoul surnamed Baek, is suspected of killing his nine-month-pregnant wife. But a Seoul court has repeatedly turned down an arrest warrant saying Park may have suffocated after slipping or that someone else may have strangled her. Another trial on the case begins tomorrow.

The prosecution and the accused are now to confront one another in what has been labeled the “Korean O.J. Simpson case.”

The case dates back to Jan. 14, when police officers visited a studio apartment in Mapo, western Seoul, and found the doctor’s 29-year-old wife surnamed Park dead in a bathtub.

The husband, suspected of killing his wife, is said to be planning to bring in a forensic doctor from Austria to defend his case. The father told the Herald Business last week that he has removed any remaining memories of his daughter such as pictures from her wedding day and family photos.

But in a recent interview Park said he had had his pregnant daughter frozen for a daily price of one hundred thousand won ($90) in the hope her body will provide helpful evidence. The prosecution has already found potential evidence from scars on Baek’s body.

Police insist that the husband is the prime suspect in the death of the woman who had less than a month before she was due to give birth. Investigators found several suspicious scars and bruises on Park’s body and the husband’s DNA in blood underneath her fingernails.

The National Forensic Service said Park likely suffocated to death.

Had Park died accidentally, there would have been serious injuries on her body, according to officers. But all that was found was a 1.5 centimeter-long wound on her spine and scars all over her body ―- not enough to take her life, officers said.

The husband claimed that Park may have slid in the bath tub and broken her neck which could have blocked her airway and resulted in her death.

He claimed the DNA could have been found under the wife’s fingernails because she had scrubbed his back several times. He said he and his wife both suffered from eczema and that she used to scratch herself and him to relieve the “intolerable itchiness.”

“딸과 외손주를 장례식장 냉동고에 보관한 지 157일 됐습니다. 어서 진실을 밝히고 장례를 치러주고 싶습니다.”

지난 1월 세간을 떠들썩하게 했던 ‘만삭 의사부인 사망사건’의 사망자 박모(29) 씨의 시신은 아직도 장례를 치르지 못하고 있다. 박 씨의 아버지 창옥 씨는 “(살인 혐의로 기소된) 사위 측에서 해외에서 법의학자를 불러 온다는데 증거품 중 하나인 딸의 시신이 있다면 진실을 가리기 더 좋지 않을까 싶어 보관하고 있다”며 “하루 빨리 진실이 밝혀져 딸과 외손주의 영혼을 위로할 수 있었으면 좋겠다”고 말했다.

▶ “딸의 시신 하루 10여만원 들여 냉동보관 중” =경기도 안양시 평촌의 자택에서 만난 박 씨와 부인 이 씨는 내내 어두운 표정이었다.

“빨리 이 사건을 잊기 위해 딸의 결혼사진, 가족사진까지 49재 때 다 내다버렸다”는 이들은 정작 딸의 시신은 장례도 못 치른 채 하루 10여만원의 높은 비용을 지불하면서 냉동보관하고 있다.

검찰은 이미 지난 3월께 제반 증거를 통해 남편 백 씨가 만삭의 아내를 목졸라 살해했다는 혐의를 잡고 그를 구속기소한 바 있다. 그러나 백 씨 측은 공판을 앞두고 오스트리아에서 법의학자를 불러오기로 했다.

검찰 측은 백 씨 측이 해외 법의학자를 부르기로 한 데 대해 1995년 치과의사 모녀사건을 벤치마킹하려는 것이라고 보고 있다. 당시에도 해외 법의학자의 의견이 주요 증거로 채택돼 1ㆍ2심을 뒤엎고 대법원에서 무죄 판결을 끌어낸 바 있기 때문이다.
▶ “검찰이 새로운 증거 잡았다더라. 진실 꼭 밝혀져야…” =박 씨는 이번 사건과 관련해 “사위가 평소 예의바르긴 했지만 가정의 사랑을 못 받고 자라나 여성을 아끼는 방법을 배우지 못한 것 같다”고 회상했다.

이 씨 역시 “딸이 자주 사위의 게임중독 현상에 대해 고민하고 상담했지만 ‘남편 기를 살려주는 게 아내의 역할’이라고 강조했는데 이런 일이 벌어졌다”며 “딸이 ‘남편이 게임에 집중하고 있을 때 뭐라 하면 굉장히 화를 낸다’고 할 때도 ‘서로 화나면 참아라. 남자 화날 때 안 무서운 사람 어딨느냐’고 했는데…”라며 울먹였다.

자영업을 하며 몇몇 기업체를 운영하는 박 씨 부부에게 이번 재판은 돈문제와 관련 없는 진실찾기 공방이다. 이들은 “아직까지는 진실찾기에만 몰입할 뿐, 민사소송 등 돈과 관련된 문제에 대해서는 절차를 진행하지 않고 있다”며 “돈 문제가 아니라 딸의 영혼을 위로하기 위한 재판”이라고 잘라 말했다.

박 씨는 “최근 검찰에서 백 씨 몸의 상처 등 새로운 증거를 찾았다고 하더라”며 “사건이 난 지 160일째 되는 오는 23일이 공판기일이다. 어서 진실이 밝혀져 딸과 외손주를 분리수술해 각각 장례를 치르고 천도제를 지내고 싶다”고 말했다.
