President Lee Myung-bak on Saturday will fly to South Africa for a weeklong tour of three African countries, Cheong Wa Dae said Sunday. The trip is part of last-minute efforts to promote Korea’s PyeongChang as the host of the 2018 Winter Olympics and to strengthen economic ties.

The president will arrive in Durban, South Africa, on Saturday evening, four days before the International Olympic Committee announces the host city of the 2018 Games on July 6.

Lee plans to speak at the final presentation for PyeongChang on Wednesday to seek support from IOC members.

Lee will also hold summit talks with South African President Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma in Durban to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation for nuclear energy and mineral resource development, as well as expansion of trade and investment.

Lee will exchange views on global issues such as the G20, climate change and development cooperation with Zuma, who is arbitrating in the Libyan crisis as representative of the African Union, Lee’s office said. South Africa is a member of the G20.

After spending five nights in Durban, Lee will fly to Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for summit talks on Thursday with President Joseph Kabila.

Lee plans to discuss development of energy resources, infrastructure construction, development aid and agricultural cooperation with Kabila, Cheong Wa Dae said in a press release.

Lee will also attend a business forum in DR Congo to meet with business leaders from Korea and the central African country. DR Congo is the third largest country in Africa in area terms, which once boasted a thriving mining sector with its rich mineral resources. Two recent conflicts, the First and Second Congo Wars, which began in 1996, have greatly reduced national output and government revenue, in addition to millions of deaths from war, famine and disease, but its economy still relies heavily on mining.

On Friday, Lee will visit the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, where he is scheduled to hold summit talks with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

Lee plans to exchange views with Meles on how to share Korea’s development experience, green growth strategies, agricultural collaboration, economic and trade cooperation as well as resources development, Cheong Wa Dae said.

Lee is also to offer flowers at the monument for Korean War veterans in Ethiopia, meet with representatives of Korean residents there, have dinner with Korean volunteers, luncheon with Korean and Ethiopian businessmen, give a speech at the Addis Ababa University and join a volunteer workers’ program.

Lee will depart Ethiopia Sunday to arrive home on Monday, Cheong Wa Dae said.

李대통령, 평창올림픽 지원차 내달 남아공行

2∼11일 아프리카 3개국 순방..콩고ㆍ에티오피아도 방문

    (서울=연합뉴스) 안용수 기자 = 이명박 대통령은 내달 2∼11일  남아프리카공화 국과 콩고민주공화국, 에티오피아 등 아프리카 3개국을 순방한다고 청와대가 26일 발표했다.

    이 대통령은 2일 남아공 더반에 도착해 2018년 동계올림픽 개최지를 발표하는 6 일까지 머물며 독일, 프랑스 등과의 경쟁에서 앞서기 위해 평창의 유치 활동 지원에 주력할 예정이다.

    특히 이 대통령은 6일에는 최종 프레젠테이션 연사로 나서 국제올림픽위원회(IO

C) 위원들에게 동계 올림픽 유치를 위해 세 번째 도전하는 우리나라의 의지와  정부 의 지원 방안 등을 설명할 방침이다.

    이 대통령은 또 더반에서 제이콥 주마 남아공 대통령과 정상회담을 갖고 교역 및 투자 증진, 원자력과 광물 등 에너지ㆍ자원 분야 협력 확대 등 양국 경제 현안에 대해 논의한다.

    또 남아공이 아프리카에서 유일한 G20 회원국인 만큼 이 대통령은 정상회담에서 한반도와 아프리카를 포함한 지역 정세와 기후변화, 개발협력 등 국제 문제에  대해 서도 의견을 교환함으로써 아프리카 진출의 거점을 확보할 방침이다.

    이어 7∼8일 콩고 방문에서 조셉 카빌라 대통령과 정상회담을 통해 에너지 자원 개발과 사회간접자본 구축, 농업 협력 등에 대해 논의하고, 양국 기업인들이 개최하 는 비즈니스 포럼에도 참석한다.

    대통령의 콩고 국빈 방문은 지난 1963년 양국 수교 이래 최초로서 지난  2000년 대 초 내전이 끝난 후 국가 재건을 위해 총력을 기울이는 콩고의 경제개발계획 수립 에 우리나라의 참여가 기대된다.

    이 대통령은 8∼11일 마지막 방문국인 에티오피아에서 멜레스 제나위 총리와 정 상회담을 열어 한국의 녹색성장 전략과 개발 경험을 공유하고, 자원 개발을 포함한 경제 협력 분야에 대한 의견을 교환한다.

    이 대통령은 6ㆍ25 전쟁 참전 기념비에 헌화한 뒤 참전용사와 간담회, 아디스아 바바 대학에서 연설, 현지 봉사단원 격려 만찬, 봉사 활동도 벌일 예정이다.

    이번 순방에는 이 대통령의 부인 김윤옥 여사도 동행해 봉사 등 외교 활동에 나 설 계획이다.

    청와대 관계자는 "아프리카 3개국 순방을 통해 취임 후 한반도 주변 4강,  중남 미, 대양주, 아시아, 유럽, 중동에 이어 글로벌 정상외교를 완성하게 될  것"이라면 서 "또 한국 정부에 대한 이해를 높여 한반도 정책에 대한 지지와 유엔 등 국제  무 대에서 공조 기반을 조성할 것으로 기대한다"고 말했다.
