Asteroid to pass by Earth on Tuesday

A small asteroid about the size of a tour bus will pass close to Earth on Tuesday, space.com reported.

The asteroid, about 10 meters wide, will make its closest approach at 2:14 a.m. Korean time on June 28 (17:14 GMT, June 27) and pass about 12,000 kilometers above Earth’s surface.

The asteroid, named 2011 MD, was discovered by LINEAR, a pair of robotic telescopes in New Mexico, which scan asteroids approaching Earth.

Scientists said there was no chance the asteroid would hit Earth.

“There is no chance that 2011 MD will hit Earth but scientists will use the close pass as opportunity to study it with radar observations,” astronomers from NASA wrote in a Twitter post on June 23.

The flyby of 2011 MD will not be the closest an asteroid has come to Earth.

On Feb. 24 of this year the asteroid 2011 CQ1 came closest at 5,471 kilometers from Earth.

한편 올해 행성이 가장 근접 비행한 날은 2월 24일로 2011 CQ1 행성이 지구로부터 5,471 킬로미터 떨어진 곳을 지나간 날이라고 한다.
