A Korean high-school team won six gold medals at this year’s Math Olympiad to help Korea finish at the top of the annual competition.
This is the first time Korea has finished first in the Olympiad, and also the first time to have won six gold medals.
The 53rd International Math Olympiad, which was held in Argentina from July 4-16, drew more than 500 students from 100 countries across the world. Korea sent a six-member team led by Song Yong-jin, a professor at Inha University.
The six-member Korean team obtained a total of 209 points to finish at the top among participants, followed by China with 195 points and the United states with 194 points.
Of those six members, 15-year-old Kim Dong-ryul from Seoul Science High School earned the highest score of 40 out of 42 to finish second among individual participants’ scores.
The International Mathematical Olympiad is the most highly regarded contest for high-school students. It was first held in Romania in 1959, and is now held annually in different countries. Korea has been regularly participating in the Olympiad since the 1988 event in Australia.
