Pop star Lady Gaga has been sued for fraudulently profiteering from the sale of wristbands designed to help the Japanese victims of earthquake and tsunami.

U.S. law firm 1-800-LAW-FIRM filed a $5 million class action suit claiming that she broke her promise to donate all the proceeds to the Japanese and overcharged buyers for shipping costs and taxes.

The case was filed Friday against the superstar, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, and affiliated companies.

The representatives of Lady Gaga denied the claim Tuesday,saying the suit is misguided and takes attention away from the kind deeds of her fans.

Shortly after the March earthquake, Lady Gaga launched a philanthropic campaign selling “We Pray for Japan” bracelets for $5 each on her website.

Although the total raised by the campaign is unknown, it brought in about $249,000 within two days of its launch.

The lawsuit accused the defendants of retaining a portion of the proceeds from each transaction and adding excessive shipping charges.

"Our intention with this lawsuit is to uncover any improprieties committed by Lady Gaga and appropriate the full donations assumed to the victims in Japan,” Alyson Oliver, a partner who filed the suit, said in a statement.

The suit also argued they artificially inflated reports of the total donations.

Lady Gaga countered the claim. “The entire $5 donation made with the purchase of each bracelet is going to support the disaster relief,” her representatives said in a statement.

"No profit is being made on shipping costs. Sales tax charges were made in accordance with local legal requirements. Lady Gaga has personally pledged her own funds to this cause and continues to support the victims of the disaster.”

The court gave 30 days for Lady Gaga to reply to the accusations. The suit could deal a blow to the singer who has been actively engaged in public issues.
