Unification Church has sent copies of a letter from its leader to followers around the world confirming news on the grave illness of its founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon and asking them to pray for his recovery, the church said Thursday.

Moon, 92, is being treated in an intensive-care unit at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital in southern Seoul for pneumonia, according to hospital officials.

In the letter, Rev. Hyung Jin Moon, head of the church and one of the sons of the ill founder, confirmed the news and asked followers never to fall into disturbance and pray for the founder's fast recovery of health, according to the church.

But he mentioned no further details of senior Moon's medical conditions.

Senior Moon, a refugee from North Korea, founded the church, officially called the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, in 1954, one year after the Korean War ended. The church has several businesses and news media outlets under its wing. (Yonhap News)

16일 통일교에 따르면 문 회장은 서신에서 "참아버님(문 총재)께서 연로하신 연세와 무리한 일정을 소화하던 중 감기와 폐렴으로 시작된 합병증으로 현재 중환자실 에서 치료 중"이라며 "최고의 의료기관과 의료진이 조속한 완쾌를 위해 최선을 다하 고 있다"고 전했다.

문 회장은 이어 "전 세계 식구 여러분은 추호라도 동요하지 말고 각자 처한 곳에서 참아버님의 빠른 회복과 기원절의 승리를 위해 정성과 기도로 참가정과 함께하 면서 최선을 다해달라"고 당부했다.

석준호 통일교 한국회장도 공문을 통해 전국의 신도들에게 다음달 24일까지 40일간 '특별정성기간'을 갖고 교회별 릴레이 특별기도회와 3일 금식 등을 통해 문 총재의 쾌유를 빌도록 당부했다.

문 총재는 현재 가톨릭대 서울성모병원 중환자실에 입원해 치료 중이다.
