Korean speed skating star seeks Russian passport

Star speed skater Ahn Hyun-Soo said Wednesday he would give up his South Korean citizenship and become Russian so that he can perform for his new country at the Winter Olympics in 2014.

Ahn, 25, a three-time Olympic and five-time world champion in short track speed skating said on his website that he has "made the decision in order to focus on skating in a better environment".

"I have been informed that if I gain Russian citizenship, my (South Korean) citizenship will automatically be nullified," he said.

"I will practise earnestly in order to show my best performance in the upcoming Olympic Games and not to regret my decision."

The star has been training in Russia -- which hosts the 2014 Games in Sochi

-- since June this year, after he fell into a slump due to a knee injury in 2008.

He failed to make the South Korean national team for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

"He's been deeply hurt. He had no supporters here," his father, Ahn Ki-Won, was quoted by Yonhap news agency.

Ahn will take part in a selection competition next month for Russia's national team.

The Russian Skaters Union (RSU) Tuesday said it had requested citizenship for Ahn, with the backing of the sports ministry.

"He renounced his Korean citizenship and decided to put his faith in Russia," said RSU president Alexei Kravtsov, adding that he hoped Ahn would receive a Russian passport in October.

The sensational move comes with Russia -- a dominant force in winter sports during the Soviet era -- aiming to win about a dozen gold medals at the Sochi Games.

South Korea leads the all-time short track medal tally with 19 gold medals and 37 medals overall. (AFP)

안현수(26)가 결국 러시아 대표팀 유니폼을 입고 2014년 소치 빙판에 서게 될 전망 이다.

러시아빙상연맹은 안현수가 2014년 소치 겨울올림픽에서 안현수가 러시아 국가 대표로 뛸 수 있도록 시민권을 따게 해 달라고 러시아 정부에 요청했다고 16일 발표 했다.

러시아 빙상연맹 알렉세이 크라브스토프 회장은 "안현수와 많은 이야기를 나누 며 세부적인 사항까지 조율을 마쳤다"면서 "안현수가 한국 시민권을 포기하고 러시 아를 위해 뛰기로 했다"고 말했다.

크라브스토프 회장은 안현수가 러시아에 계속 머물면서 은퇴 뒤에는 코치로 활 동하기를 원한다며 10월에는 러시아 여권을 발급받을 수 있으리라고 내다봤다.

안현수의 아버지인 안기원씨는 연합뉴스와의 전화통화에서 "아직 시민권을 받는 것으로 결정된 것은 아니다"라며 "러시아 연맹에서 먼저 요청한 것은 사실이며, 현 수가 긍정적으로 답한 것 같다"고 말했다.

안씨는 "현수가 한국에서 활동하면서 아무런 지원도 받지 못하고 오히려 따돌림 을 당하는 등 어려운 일을 많이 겪어 상처를 많이 받았다"면서 어려운 결정을 이해 해달라고 당부했다.

안현수는 2003~2007년 세계선수권대회 5연패, 2006년 토리노 겨울올림픽 3관왕 등 쇼트트랙 세계 최강으로 빛나는 업적을 쌓았지만 선수 생활은 평탄치 못했다.

2006년 올림픽을 마치고 나서는 '파벌 논란'의 한가운데 섰고, 2008년 무릎을 다쳐 2010년 밴쿠버 올림픽 출전권을 따내지 못하는 등 선수 생활에 위기를 맞았다.

지난해 성남시청 빙상팀까지 문을 닫으면서 소속팀 없이 외롭게 훈련하던 안현 수는 세계 최강 선수의 실력이 필요하다며 끊임없는 러브콜을 보낸 러시아에 진출하 기로 지난 4월 결정했다.

자국에서 열리는 올림픽에서 성장한 국력을 증명해 보이려는 러시아의 이해관계 와 맞아떨어지면서 안현수는 3년 뒤 러시아 국기를 가슴에 달고 빙판에 설 가능성이 커졌다.

안현수는 러시아로 떠나면서도 "소치 겨울올림픽에 출전해 재기를 알리는 것이 유일한 목표"라며 의지를 불태운 바 있다.
