State decorations are one of the best ways a country can show appreciation to an individual who has improved ties between two countries.

Last week, former Korean Ambassador to Buenos Aires Choe Yang-boo was awarded the Order of Mayo (May) in the rank of Grand Cross in recognition for his “outstanding services in strengthening the traditional ties of friendship between the two countries,” said Argentine Ambassador Carlos Arganaraz.

The honor was bestowed upon Choe during a ceremony that took place on July 28 at the Argentine ambassador’s residence in Hannam-dong.

Choe headed the Korean mission in Argentina from 2003-2006.

“In addition to his personal contribution towards the fulfillment of the traditional commitments of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, he personally worked in the organization of the visit of former President Roh Moo-hyun to Argentina,” said Arganaraz to The Korea Herald.

Choe also participated in the visits of high level Korean officials to Buenos Aires, including the visit by former Foreign Minister and current United Nations Secretary General Bank Ki-moon in 2004.

The now retired Korean ambassador was also instrumental in setting up a Korean Cultural Center in the Argentine capital during his tenure.

The work developed during his tenure continued upon his return to his home in Seoul.

Shortly after relocating in Korea, Choe, together with prominent local figures, formed the Argentine Society of Korea.

“This institution has also undertaken steps to support closer links between Korea and the whole of Latin American and the Caribbean countries,” said Arganaraz.

At the end of the ceremony, Choe expressed his gratitude and his continued commitment to the enhancement of bilateral relationship.

Argentina’s Order of Mayo is the highest honor given to foreigners who are not heads of state.
