LONDON (AFP) – The meteoric rise to fame of Scottish singer Susan Boyle is to be brought to life in a new stage musical, producers announced on Friday.

Actress Elaine C Smith -- best known for playing Mary in long-running Scottish sitcom "Rab C Nesbitt" -- will play Boyle, who was catapulted into the media spotlight in "Britain's Got Talent" in 2009.

Boyle, 50, has since sold more than 14 million copies of her two albums, "I Dreamed A Dream" (2009) and "The Gift" (2010).

The stage show, also called "I Dreamed A Dream", will open in Newcastle next year and tour for at least six months.

"I never thought my life story would end up on the stage but a lot has happened in two years and it is a very exciting prospect," said Boyle.

"I hope everyone enjoys the show and I promise there will be a few surprises along the way."

Producer Michael Harrison said: "She is an inspiring woman and her story is an excellent one to tell - someone with a raw talent who surprises the world and overturns all the odds to make a new life for herself.

"It's got all the qualities of a fairytale, but with the added bonus of being absolutely true."

The show will open at Newcastle's Theatre Royal next March, with tickets going on sale next month.

Producers have so far lined up a 26-week tour with dates in the UK, US and Australia.

Despite coming second in "Britain's Got Talent", Boyle has gone on to achieve global success.

In 2010 she topped the UK and US album charts simultaneously twice in the space of a year -- the first artist to do so since The Beatles in 1969.
